Sony is now facing a similar situation as 2022’s Morbius as fans are again questioning the studio’s intention to make another hugely underwhelming project with their recent release Madame Web. The film is already labeled one of the worst superhero films ever made and fans are in disbelief in how bad the movie turned out to be.

The Dakota JohnsonSydney Sweeney starrer has been slammed by everyone since its release and it has underperformed at the box office despite getting an extended weekend. Now, an insider of a major theatrical chain has revealed shocking information about its box office performance to The Hollywood Reporter.

The insider revealed that advance sales of tickets for the film have steadily declined which will further affect its already doomed box office performance. The insider further claimed that fans are demanding a refund and are no longer interested in watching the film. He told THR,

“On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets. It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”

An industry veteran also told THR that plans for a sequel to Madame Web have been scrapped and Sony’s efforts to make a different superhero film failed miserably. The reputation of the studio has been seriously affected and it will surely affect how fans perceive their upcoming Marvel offerings including Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3.

Madame Web Director Did Not Want to Stuff in 4 Origin Stories in One Film

Madame Web was set up as the beginning of an exciting future for the characters introduced in the film

Sony’s Madame Web presented the origin story of Cassandra Web/ Madame Web played by Dakota Johnson. The film shows the character’s younger self when she was a paramedic and how she eventually becomes the eponymous character from the comics. The film also had two Spider-Women played by Celeste O’Connor and Sydney Sweeney and Anya Corazon played by Isabela Merced.

Director S.J Clarkson told Comicbook.com that she wanted to focus on Cassandra’s Web’s story and not necessarily stuff on the origins of the other three characters. She further stated that there is a lot of time to explore these characters in future films and Madame Web was a chance to offer audiences the spirit of these characters. She said,

“Well, I thought it would be a bit greedy to do four origin stories. That’s not really fair, is it? I’ve got to share it. Come on. I mean, first and foremost, it’s Madame Web, right? But I hope the exciting thing about it is this is a tease.

And I think the origin story of the girls were given, hopefully, a hint of the spirit of who they are. that’s a lot of story to tell, I think, in one [movie]. And I think it wouldn’t do any of them justice to try and sort of crowbar or cram it all into one movie. So I think it’s Madame Web’s.”

Unfortunately, those plans are most likely not happening as the film has performed very poorly at the box office. As of now, the film has only managed to earn only $51 million in its extended opening weekend (via Box Office Mojo).
