When Sony decided to expand its Spider-Man Universe with Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web, everyone was ecstatic as the film would feature more characters from the Marvel comic books and it would feature an all-female cast featuring Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, all led by none other than the Persuasion actress. However, the film has been nothing but a major box office disaster.

Though Johnson was once excited to be a part of the film, after the film’s failure, she has made comments on her experience in the film, that dashes away all the possibility of Madame Web 2. However, that’s not all as it narrows the odds of Andrew Garfield’s much-deserved The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and fans are not happy with it.

Dakota Johnson Slashes The Probability of Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3

When Dakota Johnson’s Madame was released in theatres, fans called it a film that was worse than Morbius and despised its very existence. One of the key reasons for the film’s failure was how it failed to justify its existence in their world, and the story revolves around a character who is vaguely recognizable. But more importantly, there’s no particular reason for the story being told.

The Fifty Shades Darker actress understood this and shut off the possibility of Madame Web 2. During an exclusive interview with Bustle, Dakota Johnson shared it was unfortunate but not surprising with the outcome of the film, which is majorly affected by the committees behind it, and gave a justifiable explanation.

“It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t. Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to f*cking want to see those.”

Following her explanation, Johnson added that she would never do a film like Madame Web ever again in her career because it just didn’t make enough sense to her.

“But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world.”

The comments were a bolt from the blue because there were many fan-made theories on how Dakota Johnson’s character’s abilities will flourish even more in the sequel. It was believed that she would gain multiverse travel abilities, where she’d bring in the likes of Tom Hardy’s Venom, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield in the role of the web-slinger. Sadly, her comments not only end the possibility of a sequel but also the likelihood of Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

How is Madame Web associated with The Amazing Spider-Man?

Before Madame Web was released in theatres a rumor had started to circulate on the internet that Andrew Garfield would make an appearance in the film. Though the anticipation was high among the fans that was not the case as the film was a prequel to  Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man as the film took place in the year 2003, while Garfield’s took place in 2012 and 2014.

As ardent Marvel fans know Cassandra Webb/ Madame Web is a precognitive mutant who plays an important role in connecting Spider-People across the multiverse, so there was a high probability of building a crossover film like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, showcasing different versions of the wall-crawlers including Tom Hardy’s Venom and the much loved Garfield’s Spider-Man. Nevertheless, the possibilities are slim but not zero because the actor has teased in the past how fans might get to see the much-deserved sequel.

Madame Web can be watched in theatres near you.
