There are always fans who vehemently defend Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies. Sony’s second attempt at the web-slinger’s movie adaptation was widely considered inferior to Sam Raimi’s and MCU movies. However, the chemistry between the lead characters stood out in the film and one of Emma Stone’s mistakes in the film proves it.
The Poor Things actress and Garfield were romantically involved in real life at that time which was one of the reasons why the romance clicked with the audiences. Contrary to the earlier Spider-Man films, Gwen Stacy was made the lead opposite Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man movies.
Emma Stone’s Oops Moment Was Kept In The Amazing Spider-Man 2
While Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man was celebrated as a classic, some fans may argue that the romance between Tobey Maguire‘s Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst‘s Mary Jane left much to be desired. The Amazing Spider-Man films shone in this area, despite being considered an inferior output compared to the earlier version. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone‘s off-screen chemistry worked magic for their characters.
Moreover, Gwen Stacy became aware of Peter Parker’s identity by the middle of the first film which avoided a lot of tension between the characters, unlike Maguire and Dunst’s characters. This arc also led to one of the hilarious scenes towards the end of the second film. While fans believed this particular scene was scripted, director Marc Webb revealed that the scene was a mistake that he deliberately included in the movie.
In one of the scenes, Spider-Man finds himself unable to take down Jamie Foxx‘s Electro, as the villain would have fried his web shooters. Gwen’s timely intervention helps him to magnetize the shooters and approach Electro. However, Stone’s character wants to be part of the fight and insists that she’s going with him. Spider-Man tricks her and webs her hand to the hood of a car before taking off.
This trick prompted Gwen to mindlessly yell “Peter!” before covering her mouth. In the DVD commentary of the movie, Webb shared that Emma Stone was not supposed to yell the name and it was a genuine mistake on her part (via Looper). While it appears that Gwen made the “oops!” face for outing Peter, it was actually Emma Stone’s “oops!” face, breaking character.
For Webb, it turned out to be a “happy accident” and he decided to keep it in the film. The scene gives us one comedic and intimate moment between the characters before tragedy befalls them.
Andrew Garfield Lied About Spider-Man: No Way Home Appearance To Emma Stone
During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Andrew Garfield revealed that he did not disclose his MCU appearance to Emma Stone. While the couple split in 2015, they have remained good friends ever since. Garfield shared that Stone was curious about the rumors and texted him asking, “Are you in this new Spider-Man film?”, to which the actor played coy. Garfield shared with the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“Emma [Stone] kept on texting and she was like, ‘Are you in this new ‘Spider-Man’ film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ She was like, ‘Shut up. Just tell me.’ And I’m like, ‘I honestly don’t know.’ I kept it going even with her. It’s hilarious.”
When Stone saw the film, she was clearly pissed off at Garfield. She told him, “You’re a jerk.” However, he must be appreciated for his loyalty to the MCU movie. He told Josh Horowitz, “I didn’t want to tell anyone. I took it super seriously. I told no one.”
Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies are now available for streaming on Disney+.
