During a press event at the ceremony’s backstage, Stone was asked about her close friend, Taylor Swift, who was erupting in support of the actress throughout the night. “What an a**hole, am I right?” Stone famously stated (via USA Magazine) during the press event.

While Stone made the comment jokingly, it did not sit right with some Taylor Swift fans, resulting in online backlash. During a recent interview with Variety, Stone addressed the controversy that was sparked by her joke and stated that she had learned her lesson.

“I definitely won’t make a joke like that again because I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context.”

Stone made the above statement expressing regret about her joking especially after it was taken out of context by news outlets and portrayed negatively. Stone and Swift have been friends since they were teenagers, so it is unlikely that the joke harmed their friendship in any way.

During the conversation, Stone was asked whether she had any difficulty getting hold of her character especially because of the unique circumstances Bella faces in the movie. The actress admitted that she panicked during the first week of filming and stated the following:

“Yes! I think because I had lived with her in my mind for so long and I was so deeply in love with Bella, it terrified me not to live up to her as a character. I felt like I was failing her in the first week, and failing Yorgos. It was just difficult.”

However, Stone admitted that she gradually grew comfortable with the character. She credited director Yorgos Lanthimos’ slow and steady filmmaking approach with helping her learn the ropes of playing the character. Poor Things has been nominated in 11 categories at the upcoming Oscars.
