Knives Out has become iconic in many different ways. Not only did its cast break the internet, but its approach to the whodunit genre was so unique and intriguing that fans could not help but fawn over its genius. As if Daniel Craig playing the role of Benoit Blanc wasn’t enough, the cast also includes Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon.

The mystery genre has been around for a very long time, which has made it quite difficult to do something new. Everything has already been done and every twist has been turned far too many times. When something becomes this familiar to audiences, many filmmakers and creators draw inspiration from preexisting works to get what they think are the best parts and make something new.

Rain Johnson, the director of the film, revealed the movies that inspired the 2019 film, and the one member of the list is quite surprising. Detective Pikachu inspired Knives Out and made it into the classic that it is.

Detective Pikachu and Its Influence On Knives Out

Rian Johnson took inspiration from several projects when making the iconic film, Knives Out. According to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, five films inspired him to make the Chris Evans film. The first was the 1985 film, Clue. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, the film was based on the iconic game of the same name.

Other projects included Gosford Park, 1974’s Murder on the Orient Express, the 1978 film, and Death on the Nile. Additionally, Agatha Cristie’s works were of great help to Johnson when he was making the film. Finally, there was one movie that he drew inspiration from which sticks out in the list; Detective Pikachu, which was released a few months before the film.

This is not surprising considering how much love the Ryan Reynolds film got from audiences. While it was not the most critically acclaimed film in the mystery genre, it understood how to entertain its viewers and make them have a fun time, something that the Daniel Craig film did as well.

Detective Pikachu Gets Disappointing Update

Even though Detective Pikachu was iconic in its own way and inspired other films, it would seem that there are those who do not appreciate it as much. Despite the amount of attention it got, the second part of the film has been in production for far too long. Due to the SAG-AFTRA and Writers’ strikes, the production slowed down, so many expected everything to go back into full swing now.

However, the lead star of the film, Justice Smith, recently gave an interview with ScreenRant where he gave an update that might upset many fans.

“I have not heard of any movement. I mean, I know what was released online, but no one has called me. So I’m just waiting for that call.”

He revealed that he has not been kept in the loop when it comes to the production of the film. Any news that he is receiving is coming directly from the media, which likely means that the production may not be as fast as some would think. This is quite concerning as the first part of the movie came out in 2019.
