Becoming a fan favorite thanks to his spectacular performance in his standalone show and Netflix’s Daredevil, the star’s return to his iconic role in the MCU was naturally going to create a lot of buzz around him.

And now, reports are claiming that the role of The Punisher in the upcoming MCU series will be even more impactful and gritty thanks to the creative overhaul by Marvel Studios through his subplot of hunting down bad cops.

Jon Bernthal Would Have An Even More Significant Role To Play In Daredevil: Born Again As The Punisher

With the takeover of Marvel Entertainment by Marvel Studios in the past, the Netflix Defenders Universe was also acquired by Disney, which has led to the revival of the superhero from that franchise into the MCU. We have already seen Charlie Cox in the cinematic universe in multiple projects, all leading to his standalone series in the future, titled Daredevil: Born Again.

This show will also prove to be the revival of The Defenders in the MCU, and not to mention, the fan-favorite Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, will also make his presence felt with many more familiar faces following suit. But the star wouldn’t just be a plot device for the titular character of the show as was expected earlier, as now, he will have an even more impactful role on an individual level.

A report from industry insider Daniel Richman has revealed that along with either confronting or collaborating with Matt Murdock or eventually collaborating following this order, Frank Castle will also have a sub-plot where he would be hunting down bad cops and other law enforcement officials who use his skull symbol to perform heinous acts of crime.

In the comics, his symbol was the sign of vigilante justice, and a cop wearing that sign meant that they weren’t siding with the failing criminal system, and would rather stand with justice, even if it meant going against the system. But naturally, many bod cops used this to commit acts of corruption and crime themselves, all on the pretext of deploying unrighteous justice.

Thus, in the upcoming series, we might see this plot play out with the same gritty and visceral narration, further enhancing and deepening the character of The Punisher.

Apart from the return of Castle as his vigilante alter-ego, we also have the confirmation that Vincent D’onofrio, more popular for his role as Kingpin, will be returning for the upcoming series, evident from the impact that his character has made in several MCU shows till this point.

Along with the big bad, there will also be the reintroduction of several characters, most notably, Wilson Bethel’s return as Bullseye in the series. While major plot points are still unknown, we do have confirmation that the creative overhaul demanded by Kevin Feige has pushed for the show to be just as dark and gritty as its original Netflix counterpart was, making it all the more exciting.
