With the exit of Henry Cavill as Superman, David Corenswet will now take on the mantle of the famed caped hero. The rigorous search for the next actor to don the red and blue suit took a while, and hopefully, the long wait will all be worth it.

Superman: Legacy has been confirmed to explore a younger version of the character. The news of Henry Cavill officially hanging up the suit for good was definitely one of the saddest events in comic book movie history, but it was necessary for the overhaul of the entire franchise.

The movie will be one of the biggest and most highly anticipated titles in the DC Universe, and while Gunn repeatedly expressed his passion for the subject, he was quite apprehensive about taking the project in the beginning. He wrote in a Twitter post:

I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

Hopefully, the costume department will not forget to include Kent’s iconic red flannel because that is definitely one of the hallmarks of the superhero.

With David Corenswet finally making his way into the DC Universe, he shared his hopes for the character and informed fans of what he plans to do with the character via Entertainment Weekly:

It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me, but my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

That seems exactly what James Gunn was also prepping for when he said Superman must show humanity and kindness despite his true heritage. Hopefully, Corenswet’s rendition of the character will satisfy the audience as much as the gritty version of Cavill’s Superman.

Superman: Legacy will arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
