The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has helped many talented actors advance their careers, including Brie Larson. The Oscar-winning actress, who is renowned for her flawless acting abilities, captured audiences’ attention as Captain Marvel in the MCU. Thus, it is safe to say that Larson has become one of the most well-known figures in one of the highest-grossing media franchises over the past few years.
But her path to becoming a Marvel superhero was not an easy one. The talented actress previously admitted that she was initially hesitant and even afraid to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Larson, who began her acting career in 1998, admitted that she did not make the decision to join the MCU lightly and that there were aspects of being a part of the superpower franchise that scared her.
Brie Larson Explained Why She Was ‘Scared’ to Join the MCU
In one of her earlier interviews, Brie Larson went into more detail about some of her concerns prior to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She admitted to Harper’s Bazaar that she was actually nervous about working with Marvel Studios. She claimed that she
“Was scared of what would happen to [her]” if she joined an MCU because of the alienation that becoming a global superstar could bring. The actress, 34, was wary of the dehumanizing effects of achieving international fame, as she believed:
“You do press at certain times not when you’re lost. Not when you’re questioning yourself. [Not telling] the whole story of what it is to be a human, not even close.”
Larson reportedly received $5 million for her role as Captain Marvel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The decision felt surreal, as she further added (per Harper’s Bazaar):
“I was like, ‘What world is this, where these are the choices I have to make as an artist?’”
Despite expectations being raised by a billion-dollar franchise, the opportunity ultimately outweighed the risk. Larson put a lot of effort into keeping them in check. The Trainwreck actress joined the MCU, taking care to keep her cool and preserve her pre-superhero identity:
“Anytime I feel like I’m being put too much on a pedestal, it’s my job to figure out how to remove that within myself.”
Brie Larson Explained Her Decision to Play Captain Marvel
This was not the first time Brie Larson had discussed her choice before accepting the role of Captain Marvel. She once remarked that she accepted the Carol Danvers role because she saw the good she could do in it, both on and off the screen.
The actress shared some of the reasons behind choosing to play Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel during an interview with WWE personality Tegan Nox that she conducted on her YouTube channel (Working Out with a WWE Superstar!). Larson said that she took on the superhero persona since she wanted to “create a symbol” for other people to find happiness and strength in:
“The thing that has just broken my heart open the most has been how many different kinds of people respond to Carol. That, it’s kind of exactly like seeing you [Tegan Nox] wrestle with the star, with why I chose to do the movie, so I was like ‘I want to work really hard to create a symbol that other people can take and wear and feel power in,’ that was it. It wasn’t about me, it was about her and that star and what this means.”
Well, Larson has continued to make appearances in MCU movies like Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings since her breakout performance as the title character in Captain Marvel.
She will also appear in the eagerly anticipated movie The Marvels, which will be both a Captain Marvel sequel and a continuation of the Ms. Marvel television series. As a part of the MCU’s Phase Five, The Marvels is slated for release on November 10, 2023.
