Milly Alcock has been a hot topic of discussion after bagging the role of Supergirl in the DCU. The actress became a popular name after playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in the House of the Dragon. The conviction with which she played the young version of the character was widely appreciated by the audiences and the critics.
It must be noted that Milly Alcock is Australian. During an interview, when it was asked if putting on an American accent helped her in getting more roles, the actress did not deny the fact. She shared that recently, she spent a considerable amount of time auditioning for international roles, primarily English or American.
Did Milly Alcock’s American accent help her get more roles?
Before landing the much-appreciated role of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Milly Alcock appeared in a handful of Australian television series. She was even critically acclaimed for her leading role in the Australian comedy drama, Upright.
However, following the success of House of the Dragon, she has been more focused on getting international roles where she primarily auditions for American or English roles. She has also shifted to London from Sydney and has decided to grace her career with more international roles. On being asked about her fake American accent in the interview with Schon Magazine, she stated that her days as an Australian actress were over and it was important for the path she has chosen:
“I would say that recently there has been an influx in auditioning for international roles where I play an American or a British person, but that’s only because of the path that I decided to take in my career, to make it more international. I don’t live in Australia anymore, so I’m not auditioning for Australian stuff as much, but that’s not to say that there are not quality Aussie projects happening at the moment.”
It looks like Milly Alcock’s decision has proved successful as she got the role of Supergirl in the upcoming James Gunn’s DCU. To land the role of Supergirl, she had to fight Meg Donnelly, the voice actor of Supergirl, and Emilia Jones. Although she wanted to stay away from more fantasy roles, the actress is all set to make her DC debut in Superman: Legacy before getting her solo film.
How did Milly Alcock try to perfect her Valyrian in House of the Dragon?
While putting on an American accent helps Milly Alcock get more roles, she also learned another language to perfection for her House of the Dragon role, Valyrian. Alcock went through an arduous process to prepare for her role of Rhaenyra Targaryen. This also involved her knowledge of the High Valyrian language.
Although there was a difference between the Valyrian of her character and Emilia Clarke’s, it was widely appreciated. She worked under a dialect coach to learn the language perfectly. She stated that learning the language was like learning a song in another language (via House of the Dragon podcast)
In an interview with E! News, Milly Alcock also added that she acted like an obedient student to the dialect coach- “We just repeated and repeated and repeated until I didn’t have to think about what I was saying.” It cannot be denied that the Valyrian language has been handled with great care and perfection in the series. Now it will be seen if Milly Alcock can also give a Rhaenyra-level performance with Supergirl in Superman: Legacy.
Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025, while House of the Dragon can be streamed on Max.
