Milly Alcock has been pretty fast in climbing the ladder to the top after initially breaking out following her portrayal of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. While Meg Donnelly seemed to many to be the eventual pick for the character following her previous experience of playing Kara, Alcock’s performance in the GOT prequel was too good to look past for Gunn.

Milly Alcock Perfectly Encapsulates Kara Said James Gunn

Although Meg Donnelly is familiar with voicing Supergirl in the realm of animation, following her work in Legion Of Super-Heroes, she fell inches short of landing the role in live-action to Milly Alcock. But while Alcock’s varied auditions helped her secure the iconic gig which was previously played by Sasha Calle, the Aussie star’s performance in the GOT prequel played a major part in her selection.

Taking to Threads, James Gunn revealed that the Aussie actor was the first person he brought up to Peter Safran for the Woman of Tomorrow, set to be based on Tom King’s work by the same name. Recounting his first impression about Alcock, Gunn revealed after watching House of the Dragon, he presumed she might’ve got the “edge, grace, & authenticity” to bring Tom King’s work on Kara to life.

“In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

Alock’s casting as Supergirl has further left fans enthralled about the future of the DCU, as so far, James Gunn has been impeccable with his choices of actors in the new chapter of DC.
