While Superman is one of DC fans’ favorite superheroes, Supergirl is nothing short of one of their most favorite superheroines.
For one who was introduced back in 1984 in live-action after her appearance in the comics, Kara Zor-el was widely loved by fans even though the storylines surrounding her initial live-action appearances weren’t all that commendable.
Throughout the years, her mantle has passed from multiple actresses for numerous different projects in the same manner as almost every other superhero.
And now, after being the fourth actor to have earned the honor of playing the Supergirl onscreen, it’s time for “Colombian Badass” Sasha Calle to pass on her mantle to yet another actress, i.e. Milly Alcock, as the DC Universe proceeds toward a complete reboot under James Gunn.
Sasha Calle, Yet Another Good Supergirl, Is Getting Replaced By Milly Alcock
Over the years ever since her first live-action appearance in 1984, Supergirl has been portrayed by many different actresses, with each adding their own features to the character. But the most distinctive of them all has undeniably been Sasha Calle.
Although 2023’s The Flash couldn’t quite do her justice (the same way 1984’s film couldn’t do Helen Slater’s Girl of Steel justice), Calle’s version of the superheroine was nothing short of utterly terrific, even if it was for one movie only (which notably failed badly at the box office as well).
Her initially cold and more distinct feel because of her altered backstory that transformed her eventually into a fearless heroine by the end was what truly made Calle’s Kara Zor-el stand out all the more.
However, she will reportedly be getting replaced now by the House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, who will be taking on further projects with the start of James Gunn’s DC Universe reboot, as confirmed officially by Gunn’s Instagram (@jamesgunn).
While fans are interested in knowing what Alcock could bring to their favorite character, they are also heartbroken to find out that the “Colombian Badass” Sasha Calle will not be reprising her much-acclaimed role. Thus, to support her, here’s what some of them are saying on X:
I’m pretty sure Milly Alcock will do a wonderful job as Supergirl, but that still doesn’t mean I’m not bummed the Colombian badass Sasha Calle will not be returning. pic.twitter.com/46xAdC8iyS

She was great during the little time she was given. I particularly liked her suit.

She was the only part of The Flash worth watching.

Well, for better or worse, James Gunn has already picked out his favorite to play Supergirl in his DCU reboot, and his decisions are ones that he never goes back on. Thus, for now, fans will just have to wait for what Alcock holds in store for them as the Girl of Steel.
All 3 Actors Before Milly Alcock And Sasha Calle, Who Played Supergirl, Ranked
As Sasha Calle’s tenure as the fourth actress to play Supergirl in a live-action project gets over, with Milly Alcock taking over for her, let’s step a little bit back into the past to reminisce all the other actresses who played Kara Zor-el in a live-action before these two.
For the same, we have compiled a ranked list of all the three actresses before Alcock and Calle, who earned the honor of playing the fan-favorite cousin of Superman in a live-action project onscreen. Dig in!
3. Laura Vandervoort, Smallville TV Series
After almost two and a half decades of the first-ever Supergirl solo movie, the beloved superheroine was brought back onscreen in live-action in the 10-season TV series, Smallville. This time, she was played by Laura Vandervoort.
Although it took seven seasons before she finally appeared, Vandervoort’s physical version of the Girl of Steel undoubtedly felt like she had walked right out of a comic book page. Then there was the actress’ performance, which was equally remarkable.
However, her version had some setbacks too, like how little screentime she got through her occasional appearances. Adding to this was her superhero costume, which just wasn’t the best out of all, to be very honest.
2. Helen Slater, Supergirl (1984)
Second on this list is the very actress who gave one of the most incredible performances as Supergirl, especially for a solo movie that would have debuted the superheroine among fans in live-action for the very first time: Helen Slater.
Not only did Slater give the performance of a lifetime as the fan-favorite character, but she was also admirably praised for the perfect way she balanced the character’s vulnerability and empathy to make her all the more relatable to the target audiences.
Even though 1984’s Supergirl, the first-ever solo movie through which the Girl of Steel debuted in a live-action, failed to amuse the audiences, getting a critically panned rating for reasons more than one including its storyline, Helen Slater’s immaculate performance that was widely commended by fans and critics alike.
1. Melissa Benoist, Supergirl TV Series
No one can argue with this one: Melissa Benoist was — and will continue to do so for a very long time — one of the best actresses to have ever brought the character of Supergirl to life.
In the TV show Supergirl, which aired for six seasons between 2015 to 2021, Benoist made sure to bring a level of depth and nuance to the character that was never done by anyone before her. If anything, her portrayal was one of the most iconic ones.
Her firm and perfectly depicted resolution of hope, courage, and a fierce determination to do what’s right coupled with her immaculate ability to capture the very essence of Supergirl’s spirit was what made Melissa Benoist fans’ topmost choices when it came to the best portrayer of the superheroine.
Well, for one, all these actresses have carried on the legacy of Supergirl throughout the decades, and now, the responsibility to give a performance worthy enough of the legacy rests with Milly Alcock. Hopefully, she will end up winning hearts the same way as all the above-listed Supergirl players did.
