Milly Alcock has officially been cast as the new Supergirl in James Gunn’s DCU. James Gunn confirmed this news on his Instagram on January 29, as Alcock beats out Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly for the highly sought-after role. Per reports, Alcock is expected to star in a DC film, most possibly Superman: Legacy before going to have her own movie, Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.

Meanwhile, she has already been a star since her days on HBO’s House of the Dragon. The Australian actress gained recognition for her role as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, which has earned $3.1 billion through HBO subscriptions alone. She was also seen in some other notable television series and films, including Upright, The Gloaming, and Reckoning.

James Gunn Finally Finds His Supergirl

James Gunn has found the ideal Kara Danvers. Milly Alcock, who is best known for her role as a young Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon, has been cast as Supergirl in James Gunn’s reboot of the DC franchise.

James Gunn confirmed Milly Alcock’s casting on Instagram, writing:

This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira.”

Per various reports, Alcock as Supergirl will first appear in Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, and then go with her solo film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow which is still in early development without a set release date. 

What We Know So Far about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Superman: Legacy? 

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on the same-named limited series from Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira was named as the screenwriter for the movie. During the DCU Chapter One unveiling, Gunn described this Supergirl as being “much more hardcore” and “not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will kickstart a new era for comic book films. Safran previously stated that the new film “focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.” He added, “Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. Variety previously reported that the script “will focus on the character’s life as a cub reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis.” 

Superman: Legacy will feature David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Nicholas Hoult, Sara Sampaio, and Skyler Gisondo.

Superman: Legacy releases in theaters on July 11, 2025, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow still has no release date.
