Sydney Sweeney is slowly rising among the ranks of talented young actresses in the industry. With her breakout role as Cassie in Euphoria, the actress has also starred in the first season of The White Lotus. The actress delved into the rom-com genre with 2023’s Anyone but You, starring alongside Glen Powell.
The fun chemistry and banter between the actors attracted many fans and they thronged to the theatres to watch the film. The film unexpectedly became a huge commercial success and it even overshadowed her recent release Madame Web.
Anyone but You Achieves Box Office Milestone While Madame Web Struggles
Sony’s Anyone but You paired Sydney Sweeney alongside Glen Powell. In the current climate of Hollywood where big tentpole projects or superhero films seem to dominate the market, it was a refreshing sight to see the return of the rom-com genre with two beautiful-looking leads. The dynamic chemistry between the two was undeniable during their promotions and it led to many fans rushing to theaters to watch the film.
The film which is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing became a monstrous hit at the box office. As put by Collider, the film has now grossed $189 million becoming the highest-grossing live-action Shakespeare adaptation of all time. However, the win did not last long as Sweeney’s recent release tanked at the box office.
As of today, the Sony-Marvel film Madame Web, which was released on February 14, 2024, has minted only $51 million during its extended opening weekend (via Box Office Mojo). The chatter around Anyone but You is still going on while no one wants to talk about Madame Web after what they witnessed in theatres.
On X, fans celebrated the milestone that Anyone but You received and some made fun of how her rom-com surpassed all expectations and emerged as a hit while her big superhero film failed miserably. Here are some of the reactions,

After witnessing a huge hit at the end of 2023, Sweeney has now faced an unmitigated disaster in the form of Madame Web. However, with the release of Anyone but You on digital today, fans will surely divert their attention and enjoy the rom-com again in the comfort of their homes.
Sydney Sweeney Addresses the Possibility of a Anyone but You Sequel
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell scored a big win with 2023’s Anyone but You. The film has grossed $189 million worldwide and rom-com fans have enjoyed the film tremendously. The film was a fresh break from all the big studio films and audiences embraced the film with so much love and made it a big hit for Sony.
At the Madame Web premiere, The actress was asked by E!News about the possibility of a sequel to the hit film. The actress played coy while also revealing that she and Powell have talked about ‘some stuff’ and fans have to wait and see what happens. She said,
“I can’t actually reveal all of my secrets. But Glen and I—I mean I was talking to him this morning. We’re talking about stuff. You never know, you’ll have to wait and see.”
The film has catapulted both Sweeney and Powell’s star power and proved that rom-coms still have a life in theatres and people still crave entertaining low-budget films. Fans can now watch/buy the film on digital platforms like Amazon Prime or iTunes.
