Donald Glover’s new Amazon Prime series Mr. & Mrs. Smith, based on the 2005 Doug Liman movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is currently the hot topic, following its release. Just like the movie, the show featured a similar plotline about two strangers, who are actually assassins, forced into a sham marriage, as they romance their way out.
Well, we narrated the 2005 film’s plotline just in case, because many of you might be new to the narrative, just like Donald Glover himself. No matter how shocking it sounds, Glover, who appeared as a lead in the show, had never watched Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s classic film. It wasn’t until he finished shooting that the actor sat down to watch the film.
Donald Glover Never Watched Brad Pitt’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith
During Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s prime years in Hollywood and their romance, the duo appeared in Doug Liman’s classic movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005. Turning the film into an iconic masterpiece, Pitt and Jolie played the role of assassins disguised as strangers – John and Jane Smith, respectively.
Now, after decades since the iconic film hit the theatres, Marvel actor Donald Glover has come up with an Amazon Prime remake of the 2005 movie. Turning the film into a series, Glover shared the screen with Maya Erskine, to play Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s roles. But shockingly, despite making a remake, the MCU actor noted he never watched the film until recently.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Donald Glover admitted that he hadn’t watched the movie until recently after wrapping production. “No, I didn’t see it. I hadn’t at the time. I’ve seen it, obviously, by now. It’d be scary if I hadn’t. It’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s what this is about? Spies?’” Glover shared. However, his ignorance towards the movie had a specific reason, although it affected his work significantly.
Donald Glover Tried Seeking Advice from Brad Pitt
According to Donald Glover, he previously refrained from watching Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 classic Mr. & Mrs. Smith, because he first wanted to work out how the show would go. Trying to give his own spin to the role of John Smith, which was previously played by Pitt, Glover wanted to make it unique.
Therefore, refraining from watching the cult classic, Donald Glover instead tried taking insight from Brad Pitt himself. But unfortunately, his plans failed as Pitt quite charmingly made his way out, without offering Glover any wisdom. Simply claiming that he would do just fine, the Flight Club actor “charmed his way out”.
“He didn’t give me any real pointers. He kind of Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it. He just kind of like charmed his way out. He was like, ‘Yeah, you know, you’ll do great.’”
Eventually, Donald Glover played the role of John Smith, without any proper insight from Brad Pitt or the movie. And it turns out, he did a perfectly fine job in playing the role of a spy, alongside co-star Maya Erskine, who are both forced into new identities and tied in an arranged marriage.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime from February 2.
