This master brain is none other than one of the directors of the superhit animated series from 1999, Butch Lukic. And as it turns out, he has some seriously good pieces of advice for the Guardians of the Galaxy director on how to helm his upcoming DC Universe reboot — some pretty neat advice that even fans would agree with.

Batman Beyond Director’s Advice to James Gunn for DCU Reboot

As the fans of the DC Animated Universe must already know, Butch Lukic has been one of the most brilliant minds behind some of the best episodes of Batman Beyond. And his advice for Gunn on how he should helm his reboot of the DC Universe is nothing short of genius either.

This happened in an interview with ScreenRant, where Lukic and some other directors and producers from the DCAU were asked what Gunn’s DC Universe could learn from their animated pieces for the DC superheroes.

Explaining how it has always been a great dynamic for them because “we grew up fans” and “wanted to be comic book artists and writers,” Lukic said:

“In our heads, we know the characters, and what’s always stuck there is doing the real version of what you grew up with and stick with that. Don’t vary from that ever. There’s no point. There’s no reason.”

Indeed, history has proven that wavering from the original source material has hardly done anyone any good. This is why James Gunn should stick super close to all the material from the comics for his version of the superhero universe’s reboot.

Continuing, the Batman Beyond director further shared what approach The Suicide Squad director should have with new/varying characters. He said:

“You want to vary characters or anything else, create a new character and do that. But for the majority of the DC characters that have been staples of the company for years, stick with what they always were. Don’t f–k with them.”

That’s it. That’s the path Gunn needs to trek on if he wishes to make his DC Universe reboot successful.

While Butch Lukic’s advice is one thing, producer James Krieg had some even more golden words on how Gunn’s DC Universe could be made more enjoyable and have fans forget the sour taste of the disasters from the DC Extended Universe.

According to Krieg, the co-CEO of DC Studios’ approach should be more inclined to give fans what they remember. As he said:

“What we try to do with these adaptations is give you the thing you remember, and it isn’t always beat-for-beat because these stories are often told over a long period of time.”

But what to do with those threads that “never get tied up” and “things you don’t remember”? Krieg has an answer for that too:

“We try to take them and say, ‘What did you remember when you think of this arc?’ And we try to put that together in a way that tells a story that you think you remember.”

Well, these genius pieces of advice from the masterminds behind some of the best projects from the DCAU are truly golden and worth remembering, so James Gunn, you better start taking notes!
