Why Iman Vellani Struggled During the Filming of Her Marvel Movie

Iman Vellani is living the dream of every Marvel comics fan. The Canadian actress was a Marvel super-fan and used to make her own Marvel costume before she became their superhero.

She bagged the part of Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old high school student, and superhero fangirl, for the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. Her character resonated with many fans and led to Vellani starring in Marvel Studios’ high-profile project, The Marvels, alongside Brie Larson.

Despite rising to stardom so quickly and impressing in both of her stints in the MCU, the young actress still struggles to deal with the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking. In particular, she found doing some scenes in front of green screen “embarrassing”. Speaking to The Direct, she revealed:

“You know, it’s like in front of a green screen and dead silence, then you’re like dangling from a harness with dots on your face in midair. And it’s just so embarrassing because you have to remind yourself, Oh, you’re saving the world–But don’t forget your blocking and don’t move too much because they’re gonna make the background move behind you. And, oh, what’s it like being on an alien planet? Like how much gravity?”

Working with green screen is a big part of Marvel filming and Vellani isn’t the only actor to struggle with it. In an interview with GQ, Christian Bale, who starred in Thor: Love and Thunder, described his experience of working in front of green screen as monotonous.

Why Elizabeth Olsen Found It Embarrassing to Film Marvel Movies

Elizabeth Olsen has also previously admitted to finding filming Marvel movies “embarrassing.”

Known for portraying the master of mystical arts Wanda Maximoff, the WandaVision actress has had to film several scenes where she is asked to wave her hands in front of green screen to convey the magical moves of Scarlett Witch. Talking about the experience of filming such scenes, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star said (via The Independent):

“… Because you’re like — [holds out her hand]. Ugh, I’m doing this in public. But you have one hand out that’s stopping something with energy. And then you’ve got another hand that’s extracting this fake thing from this dotted face. And it’s painful and emotional.”

Be it preventing actors like Vellani from improvising or boring the life out of Bale or making Olsen feel embarrassed, green screen acting undoubtedly poses a lot of challenges for stars. However, at the same time, everyone acknowledges their importance in building the magical and enormous world of Marvel and understands that for the foreseeable future, it’s going nowhere.
