Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance at Smackdown where Cody Rhodes gave up his place to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL. This move received extreme backlash from fans who were expecting an official announcement of a rematch between Rhodes and Reigns.
Johnson even received a loud booing from audiences as he stole the much-anticipated match that would have been a climactic moment for Rhodes’ WWE arc. Fans did not let go of Johnson even in his recent social media post where he gave an enormous boost to MMA fighter Themba Gorimbo.
Fans Are Still Angry at Dwayne Johnson After Stealing Cody Rhodes’ Thunder
Cody Rhodes’ much-awaited rematch against Roman Reigns was cut short when Dwayne Johnson was abruptly set up as Reigns’ contender at WrestleMania XL. The audience’s frustration was evident when Johnson got booed by the audience and they are not letting it go anytime soon as they expressed their anger at his recent post on his social media.
Johnson recently supported rising MMA fighter Themba Gorimbo on Instagram and his inspiring journey from having only 7 bucks (just like Johnson), to buying a well for his village after selling his fight kit. In addition to gifting him a luxurious house, his company ZOA Energy will be sponsoring and supporting Gorimba and his MMA pursuits.
Despite this sweet and inspiring endeavor, fans were still not impressed with Johnson with one fan commenting, “WE WANTED CODY VS ROMAN NOT YOU!!”. Another fan wrote, “Nobody wants you at WrestleMania”. They are clearly still disappointed with him for stealing Rhodes’ thunder and robbing them of an exciting match between Rhodes and Reigns.
A24 is Excited for Dwayne Johnson and Benny Safdie’s Upcoming Film
A24 is no stranger to bringing forward films that push boundaries and is not afraid to experiment with new ideas and concepts. Their films like Moonlight, The Whale, Minari, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and many more have been nominated for and won several Oscars over the years. The studio is now set to collaborate with a big star like Dwayne Johnson for the upcoming MMA drama directed by Benny Safdie, based on the life of Mark Kerr.
The project will also be a departure for Johnson from his usual star-driven vehicles and present Johnson in a rare character-driven role. In a statement (via Variety), A24’s Noah Sacco praised the dynamic talents of both Johnson and Safdie and expressed his excitement in bringing the inspiring story to life. He said,
“Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life”
A24 seems to be branching out its territory and is starting to collaborate with big stars for their projects which will certainly bring more attention to the studio. The project is expected to start shooting sometime this year and be released next year. It will be exciting to see the return of Johnson as a dramatic performer after 2013’s Snitch.
