Both Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin are considered the greatest of minds in fantasy and Elden Ring proves that, with fans and critics applauding the creators but Martin has always kept his contribution to the game second and has insisted that Miyazaki should be praised for the game.

Back in 2022, when Elden Ring was released, George R.R. Martin said that the game had been “taking the gaming world by storm” and acknowledged the reviews and praise for the game, calling it “music to the ears.” He also stated that players must not listen to him because FromSoftware brought him for just worldbuilding so he can not “pretend to be objective.”

He added that he only had a small role in the game but this is just Martin downplaying his contribution to the game. Martin had further added that the credit for the game should go to Hidetaka Miyazaki and the team of designers who have worked on the game for over a decade and called Elden Ring a “landmark megahit.” Martin said:

Of course, almost all the credit should go to Hidetaka Miyazaki and his astonishing team of game designers who have been laboring on this game for half a decade or more, determined to create the best video game ever.

I am honored to have met them and worked with them, and to have played a part, however small, in creating this fantastic world and making ELDEN RING the landmark megahit that it is.

However, George R.R. Martin has contributed more to the game than he acknowledges. In a conversation with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Martin said that FromSoftware, the creator of Elden Ring had contacted him several years ago and wanted him to build the world of the game which is what he’s been doing for years now.

Martin revealed that FromSoftware told him that the game would take in the present of FromSoftware’s game universe but wanted him to write what happened 5000 years ago that resulted in how the present world ended up in the game. He said that he wrote about that as well as the characters, their powers, “who was killing each other,” and more.

Martin can say all he wants about having played a “small role” in the game but given how much the lore, the world, and the characters have been applauded, he did more than he chooses to believe. The game director Hidetaka Miyazaki himself has said that he has engaged in “many free and creative conversations” with Martin that have resulted in “overarching mythos for the game world itself.”

Miyazaki added that this mythos was filled with drama and interesting characters as well mysterious elements that were a great “source of stimulus” for him and the development team and the in-game world is the result of the mythos and stimulus and considering how well the game world is, George R.R. Martin has almost the same impact on the game as Miyazaki if not more.
