The notorious difficulty of FromSoftware’s games is no secret, where players often encounter intentional oddities in their challenging quests. The recent game-breaking experience of a fellow Tarnished in Elden Ring took this to a whole new level, leaving the community bewildered and jokingly speculating that it could have been an intentional feature.

On their usual game playthrough, a player encountered a peculiar phenomenon as their controller mysteriously began powering off under a specific condition. As their frustration mounted, they turned to Reddit’s Elden Ring community to unravel the mystery and made the connection between the ‘bug’ to a particular feature of their controller.

Earlier this month, a post titled “Controller turns off after getting hit by enemies” hit the Elden Ring Reddit community. The poster detailed the bizarre phenomenon of how, as the title describes, their controller would immediately turn off after receiving damage, excluding poison and scarlet rot. In the video that has since been removed, the player was using an Xbox 360 controller.

The post was instantly flooded with comments, many of them light-heartedly pulling the poster’s leg. One commenter claimed “it’s the new feature” because “people complained Elden Ring was too easy,” another exclaimed, “Miyazaki is a genius.” In contrast, others pushed hard for a no-hit run, despite the player’s warning in their original post:

“I am not willing to do ‘No Hit Run.’”

Plenty of players contributed helpful information, with some suggesting it could’ve been a problem with the controller’s vibration settings. A commenter explained,

“Vibration or low batteries has almost always been the issue for me as well, though this looks like a 360 controller? Some of those had an issue where the battery box would not click into where it should/would lean out a bit too which made it a lot easier for this to happen. I used to put a piece of duct tape across the battery box, though over time this leads to more damage to the battery box.”

The player soon after commented on the post, confirming that the issue was related to the vibrations.

“SOLVED: Left rumble motor died and kept short circuting when triggered (by enemy strike) Thanks to everyone for tips about vibrations.”

If you’re playing on a controller and encounter any similar issues, it’s good to keep in mind that low battery or broken rumble functions could be the root cause of the problem.
