The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is blowing up online and rightfully so. The trailer is a cinematic marvel showing us what to expect in this expansion, and there is a lot. But, the trailer’s beauty may have made you miss out on some pretty significant details. Here are 7 details from the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC that you may have missed out on!

7. Entering the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion

Forget touching grass, it's time to touch a rotting hand.
Forget touching grass, it’s time to touch a rotting hand.

FromSoftware has made it a point to make entering the new DLC areas involve interacting with something in the base game. The studio continues this trend with Shadow of the Erdtree, as players will have to have defeated Mohg if they wish to access the Land of Shadow.

In Mohg’s arena, touching the hand extending out of the egg-like housing will transport players to the new map. This also reinforces the fact that Miquella will play a key role in this game, as you enter the DLC by his ‘grace’.

6. New Spells and Incantations

New spells and incantations were shown that the players can use. One of them appeared to be an AOE involving pink bursts, while the other seemed like a new crucible incantation that gave the players the same wings as some of the Crucible Knights.

Most interesting was the giant bear-like head. The same animation is used during a dragon’s breath incantation, and given there are already rumors that the bears in Elden Ring are part dragon (from consuming their hearts), we may have some bear breath incantations as well.

5. Messmer’s Slithery Friend

Messmer, the red-haired mystery character, appears to be the antagonist of the expansion. While the red hair indicates he is a child of Radagon, what’s more interesting is the red snake that appears by his side constantly. There is only one other character in the base game who is associated with snakes: Rykard, the Lord of Blasphemy who resides in Volcano Manor.

We are not sure yet how Messmer and Rykard are related, but the snake is no coincidence as there are no coincidences in FromSoftware games. The expansion may give us insight into how Rykard and the God-Devouring Serpent became one as well!

4. New Weapons

Shadow of the Erdtree is going to bring a whole host of new weapons to the game, and even introduce unarmed fighting. In the trailer, we clocked a Tarnished character landing multiple kicks onto an opponent with a golden aura around their feet.

If hands and feet are going to start flying, it may change Elden Ring combat entirely. We also see other weapons such as a large bomb and even a repeater crossbow that will be added to the weapons list.

3. Young Renala

We catch a brief glimpse of what appears to be Carian Queen Renala in her younger years. This may also point to the fact that we will be going back in time in this DLC. FromSoftware’s other DLCs have also jumped between timelines to offer a better understanding of the world, so this isn’t all that surprising, but it will be interesting to see how Renala fits into the story and if the character gets to interact with her at all.

2. Skeleton Bones

In one part of the trailer, we see a skeleton pulling out what appears to be a sword from its skull. As eye-catching as that is, it’s the bones jutting out from its torso that’s more interesting. They sort of look like a reference to the Elden Ring rune, and could reference that the Golden Order has some role to play in this expansion.

1. Miquella’s Appearance

In case you were wondering who the fair-skinned blonde-haired individual was towards the end of the trailer, that was none other than the demigod Miquella himself. The final shot of his hand revealing the Erdtree could be a link to the Haligtree from the base game, but the moment is so brief that it’s hard to discern anything further.
