The number of speculations and fan theories that fans come up with for Elden Ring is just astonishing. Pretty much every character in this game has been given an interesting backstory by those numerous fans. And it’s not like they come out of nowhere; often, these fan theories have some very logical context behind them.

And it makes sense too; FromSoftware has decided to keep the story of Elden Ring pretty vague. This means players would always have to speculate a detail or two when it comes to uncovering these stories. That’s why today fans have more than one fan theory about each of these characters, and pretty much all of them feel logical. Lately, one such theory has surfaced about Torrent, and it’s as wild as they come.

The latest Elden Ring fan theory suggests that Torrent is Greater Will

The story of Elden Ring is pretty straightforward: a character enters a new world, and they are guided by a couple of mysterious entities to fight the dominant powers ruling there. Then they are asked to eradicate the most powerful thing that has an impact there and rule it themselves. It remains straightforward by the time players realize that this game does not like telling all of the story in full.

To dig through more minute details and find out what’s really happening under the cover, fans have to talk to everyone and read every product description. If players decide to complete those vague side quests, things get even better. Those side quests also end up revealing some crucial bits of these stories. Otherwise, some of the very important and significant characters of Elden Ring end up remaining out of sight.

Two such characters are the Greater Will and the player’s horse, Torrent. Yes, even though Torrent is always with the player during the span of the game, players hardly know much about him. He just appears, double jumps like a bada**, and then vanishes once he has served his purpose.

The Greater Will is the one entity that is never seen in the whole game. But one thing that has been made clear is that it was the greater will that started this game of Elden Ring, Erdtree, etc. It is basically the one ruling over them all; even Queen Marika was put on that throne as the ruler of the Lands Between by the Greater Will.

But where is the greater will? Fans see Marika, they see Radahn, and they even see the Elden Beast, but where is the Greater Will? Once all is said and done, it is nowhere to be seen during the game. Players only hear about it; it must be somewhere, observing everything that goes on in this world.

Well, a very interesting theory by Redditor Wardog_E suggests that maybe Torrent is the Greater Will. They compare this game’s story to a manga called Magic Knight Rayearth and suggest that Greater Will is following the player character as Torrent just the way the god in that manga follows the main character as their companion.

Maybe the Greater Will is observing how the player character does things to start this cycle all over again, but coinciding with the player’s decisions? And maybe Melina is in on this test? This theory blows most of what people have suggested before out of the water. But only the developers or the upcoming DLC Shadow of the Erdtree would know if it was truthful or not.

But there are a bunch of things that contradict this theory

While this theory of Torrent being the Greater Will sounds interesting, there are probably a lot of things that also contradict this theory. If Greater Will is Torrent, how come it lets Ranni do what she wants to? Players continuously go on a quest to help her escape the grasp of Greater Will.

On the other hand, if Greater Will were ever Torrent, it would allow players to do everything, but it would not let them stay on the side of the Dung Eater. He is seen as a vile creature who is on a path for vengeance; he does all that’s unholy to people, even when they are dead, just out of sheer hatred. The greater will could have tried to prevent that from happening. Still, these are some small things that can have simple answers; maybe these would be cleared up in a sequel if one ever releases them.
