Elden Ring is a massive game that hides numerous stories behind a thin veil of intentionally broken narrative. This means that some story details in this game will always be left to interpretation. There are some hardcore fans of Elden Ring who are accustomed to uncovering these stories, but this game is so big that there’s always some detail that gets left out.
While these stories are mostly complete now, there are still some details that fans are very doubtful about. Fans have often argued about the specific character that started the harrowing series of events that led to the shattering Elden Ring. Some say it was Lunar Princess Ranni, but others suggest she had another very powerful partner in crime.
Did Melina help Ranni in her plot to kill Godwyn the Golden in the Elden Ring?
Stories that are never told but are hinted at are often pretty dangerous, as they force people to interpret stuff. Interpretations are often wrong, and that’s why there are chances that fans might not know the full story of Elden Ring yet. It also means that some characters are telling the player very calculated things.
Take Melina, for example; she finds players and takes them under her wing. She hands them the whistle that is used to call Torrent. She even talks in brief about Torrent’s old owner, but never reveals who the owner was.
Eventually, she reveals how her mother inspired her, and then talks about how she just wants to burn the ever-growing Erdtree. And she does exactly that: when players defeat the fire giant, she deliberately throws herself into that large forge and sets the tree on fire.
Then there’s Lunar Princess Ranni. Despite knowing pretty much everything about her, one can say she is the most mysterious figure in this game. She is equally wicked; and actually killed her half-brother just so she could escape a prophecy.
For those unaware, it was Ranni who stole the rune of death and gave it to the black-night assassins. These assassins then went on to kill a bunch of demigods, primarily Godwyn the Golden, her half-brother.
He was the son of Queen Marika, and upon hearing of his death, she went into an uncontrollable rage and destroyed the Elden Ring. As a result of this harsh action, she is now trapped in the Erdtree, probably forever, as her alter ego Radahn tries to mend what’s broken.
But this stuff does not just happen without some other key elements; for one, Melina is not very truthful to the player. She once told players that she would only be able to be their maiden if she was brought to the foot of Erdtree. Then she admits that she can never be a maiden, and her main focus is to do as her mother asked her to, for which she needed the Tarnished.
“I’m searching for my purpose given to me by my mother inside the Erdtree long ago, for the reason that I yet live, burned and bodiless….“
The only person trapped inside the Erdtree is Queen Marika; she is no doubt Melina’s mother. But if she asked her daughter to burn the Erdtree, that meant she was in the conspiracy to destroy the Elden Ring from the start, and so was Melina.
The other thing is that she just saw her mother suffering in that tree and was just asked by her mother to “find her purpose.” This is nothing new either; she says this kind of stuff to all her kids.
“Hear me, Demigods. My children beloved. Make of thyselves that which ye desire. Be it a Lord. Be it a God. But should ye fail to become aught at all, ye will be forsaken. Amounting only to sacrifices…”
Maybe Melina saw revenge for her mother as her purpose and helped players burn the source of her mother’s suffering. This means that she might not have been part of Ranni’s plans, but is still one of the most dangerous characters in the game.
Would Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree reveal the truth about Melina?
Melina is the source of the player’s power; she helps them level up, but the character ends up dying at the end of the Elden Ring. So how would it work in the DLC? Would she come back to the DLC? If she does, then how does that work?
There are only two things possible: either she comes back to life somehow, revealing to the player character her life story and explaining how she came back. Alternatively, the developers may have added a power mechanic to diminish the need for leveling up. This would only be revealed once Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree launched on March 20, 2024.
