The foundation of the MCU was laid out by the Robert Downey Jr. starrer Iron Man. The film was a huge success upon release, which was a huge surprise for Marvel executives as the film had no bound script before filming, and nor were they confident with Downey Jr.’s involvement in the film due to his legal and personal troubles.

However, the film earned $585 million at the box office and became the starting point for the MCU. The studio immediately commissioned a sequel and the decision was made to introduce the character of Natasha Romanoff a.k.a Black Widow in Iron Man 2. While looking for a suitable actress, the team approached Emily Blunt, who had a breakthrough with The Devil Wears Prada.

However, the actress had to forgo the role as she was contractually obligated to star in the comedy Gulliver’s Travels. The role went to Scarlett Johansson instead. Blunt revealed in The Howard Stern Show about her experience with the film,

“I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels…There were a lot of really lovely people who were heaven to work with. I actually had a good time, a laugh, with all of them, but it irked my heart for it to have happened in the first place.”

The actress has not yet been cast in any Marvel roles but many fans believe that she would be a perfect fit for the role of Susan Storm.

While talking on The Howard Stern Show about her career, Emily Blunt had high praises for her Oppenheimer co-star Robert Downey Jr. While the two do not share any scenes, the two have been considered to be some of the powerhouse performers in the huge star cast led by Cillian Murphy.

The actress regretted her missed chance to work with the Iron Man star and said,

“I care very deeply, very, very much, about the choices I make. That’s all I have, the choices that I make. I love Iron Man, and when I got offered Black Widow, I was obsessed with Iron Man. I wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. — it would’ve been amazing.”

While she may have lost one chance at work with Downey Jr. as Iron Man, recent rumors indicate the return of the actor in the iconic role in Avengers: Secret Wars. There has been no confirmation from the team at Marvel, but multiple scoops are indicating that the actor has agreed to return to the role.

This would be the perfect opportunity to cast Emily Blunt as the Invisible Girl a.k.a Susan Storm in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. The Matt Shakman directorial recently announced that Pedro Pascal was cast as Reed Richards. It is also rumored to have cast Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm in the film, however, there are no confirmations of the latter.

Emily Blunt would be the perfect fit for the character and she carries the necessary stardom to make it happen. It is also fitting that her husband John Krasinski played the role of a variant of Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness. With Secret Wars touted to be the climactic battle, there is a chance for all the characters to show up, including Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
