After the catastrophic end of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo Brothers had a tall order to deliver an epic eventful conclusion to the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame. The anticipation for the film was something unprecedented and the film managed to surpass those huge expectations with a grand yet bittersweet ending that celebrated the history of the MCU.
The film also broke and created several box office records, starting from its opening weekend. The film collected $357 million and $1.2 billion in its domestic and worldwide opening weekend (via Deadline), which is something that will likely never happen again. The only film that came even close to achieving that milestone was 2021’s Spider-Man No: Way Home which collected $260 million domestically on its opening weekend,
The film that came close to Avengers: Endgame‘s worldwide opening weekend was 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War with $640 million (via Variety). That is a huge gap and it proves that no film in the last 5 years has been able to dethrone Endgame. Before Avatar‘s re-release in 2021 (its gross is now at $2.9 billion), Avengers: Endgame was the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.79 billion (via Variety).
The film is also the highest-grossing superhero film of all time, and will most likely remain that way forever. The only film that may come close to its worldwide gross is the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars film. It remains to be seen if any film in the future manages to break these historic records that Avengers: Endgame achieved.
Robert Downey Jr’s Recent Iron Man Comment Confuses The Russo Brothers
Iron Man’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame is one golden moment in the MCU that provided a cathartic reaction for fans. The death brought Tony Stark’s arc to a close and Kevin Feige has stated how they will never undo that moment. However, Robert Downey Jr. recently expressed that he would happily return as the character in a heartbeat.
The Russo brothers reflected on Downey Jr’s statement and expressed their confusion as to how the character would ever return after his death in Avengers: Endgame. They believe that the film closed the book for the character, and if the studio wants to undo it somehow, they have to figure a way out. The directors told Gamesradar+,
“I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the road to that would be [laughs]. I mean, we closed that book, so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.”
Many fans continue to believe that Downey Jr. will return in some what or form in the MCU’s future, and Downey Jr’s recent comments have further ignited that rumor. However, as the Russos stated, it will be a tall order and risks ruining his monumental sacrifice. It remains to be seen if the studio brings back Iron Man in the future.
