Invincible ended its second season with a bang. In the classic Multiverse of Madness-style, there is an entire sequence where Mark is thrown from one universe to another, each having some or the other Easter egg. From Spider-Man showing up in the form of Agent Spider, who was fighting Prof. Ock, to Invincible making fun of Batman’s name on a rooftop, this part of the episode was fun, to say the least.
On top of these references, there was also a universe plagued with zombies, making a not-so-subtle nod to just how many people from The Walking Dead are a part of the series. One would assume that one of these three cameos would be favored by the show’s creator, Robert Kirkman. However, it would seem that something else had him a lot more excited; a split-second cameo of a gun.
Granted, the gun was from the game Fortnite; it would seem that sneaking this cameo in made Kirkman very proud of himself.
Invincible Creator Loved the Fortnite Reference
Around the midpoint of his fight with Angstrom Levy, Mark enters his home through a portal with a gun in his hand, which he uses to hit the villain in the face. In the next shot, the gun is gone and is not referenced again. Despite the split-second appearance, Fortnite fans could tell the origins of the rifle.
Robert Kirkman recently gave an interview with Variety, where he talked about all of the Easter eggs that showed up in the final episode of season two, and the back story of the Fortnite gun is quite interesting. A model of the Dragon’s Breath Sniper was added in Chapter 2: Season 5 of the game and the entire cameo was made in association with Epic Games.
That was all done in cooperation with Epic Games, and it’s the actual model for the Dragon’s Breath sniper rifle. That was all referenced and approved and seemed like a fun nod since he’s in the “Fortnite” game. Maybe Angstrom sent him there and everything in the game is canon and he’s coming out with a gun. That seemed like a fun, official Easter egg we could do.
Speaking more on it, the creator of Invincible revealed that he thought the cameo to be a fun nod to the series’ time in Fortnite. Since that gun was not present for long and the question of where he got it from was not answered, Kirkman added that perhaps Mark’s time in the game’s universe was real and the story that happened there was simply off-screen, but canon.
Robert Kirkman Was Writing The Finale At The Same Time As Invincible’s Fortnite Run
Robert Kirkman then went on to talk about Invincible’s appearance in Fortnite. Mark Grayson, alongside Omni-Man, and Atom Eve, were released as character skins in Chapter 4: Season OG under The Guardians of the Globe set. Fans of the series absolutely loved the addition, and it would seem that the cameo and their entry into the game were happening simultaneously.
“I was writing the episode, or was about to start writing the episode, when I had my initial talks with Donald Mustard, who was the creative lead on “Fortnite” but has since left the company. He was really on board to do something in the show that references it and help push it through on their side. It was kind of an organic thing that happened because we were talking about Invincible being in the game at the same time as I was writing the episode.”
Kirkman went on to add that he was working with the former Creative Lead of Fortnite, Donald Mustard, and they were both interested in adding a reference to the game in the series. It would seem that as talks were happening about Invincible being in the game, Kirkman was writing the final episode. The two blurring together almost seemed to be natural.
Invincible is available for streaming on Prime Video.
