In 2008, DC and Warner Bros. released an animated superhero film called Justice League: The New Frontier adapted from the comic book DC: The New Frontier. The story is essentially a collaborative storyline revolving around Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow to name a few. An elusive entity called ‘The Centre’ located on a remote island (Dinosaur Land) has a belief that humans are the real cause of chaos and destruction in the world and they must be ‘dealt’ with. The Justice League investigates The Centre and its activities ending up in a tumultuous tale.

On The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider speaks about this interesting new story his source at DC believes to be James Gunn’s ‘secret’ project that he has revealed to the press.

“[…] The secret project is a Justice League project, based on The New Frontier[…]”

[…] James Gunn thinks to introduce this concept in [Green] Lanterns, and they think that Andy Muschietti could end up directing it.”

John Rocha was very excited to hear this as well, as Sneider went on to share how it was just a theory and not an official word. However, we can keep in mind Gunn’s plans for the future and expect this to come to light.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have entered DC Studios to make an impact. On DC’s YouTube channel, Gunn has a video titled Chapter 1-Gods and Monsters which elaborates how DC has been “disconnected” from film and television for a while, and how he plans to consolidate the same.

“[…] And make sure the DCU is connected, in film, television, gaming, and animation. That the characters are consistent, played by the same actors, and works within one story, and if something is outside of that, like Matt Reeves Batman or Todd Philipps Joker or Teen Titans GO!, is labeled as DC Elseworlds outside of the mainstream DCU continuity.”

In the showcase, Gunn mentioned the upcoming releases in order. Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, which was recently released on 17th March 2023 and connects to Ezra Miller’s The Flash, which would ‘reset’ the entire DC universe and then move it into Blue Beetle set to release on 18th August 2023. Which ultimately moves to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, set to release on 25th December 2023.

Gunn then explains his 8-10 year plan, which kicks off with Chapter-1 Gods and Monsters. Gunn’s first project is DC’s Creature Commandos, an animated series that will showcase characters moving to and fro between animation and live-action, then comes Waller for the storyline of Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis with team Peacemaker.

Next up is James Gunn’s most exciting project titled Superman: Legacy set to release on July 11th, 2025. Thereafter, would be an HBO television series called Lanterns with John Stewart and Hal Jordon at the center of the story.

The Authority is another movie in James Gunn’s plans based on The WildStorm characters which will interact with all the primary DCU characters. Based on Paradise Island, the birthplace of Wonder Woman, is a story that Gunn is working on, called Paradise Lost, and he says it’s a blend of Game Of Thrones and the citizens of Paradise Island.

For Batman, Gunn shares the title The Brave And The Bold which is a story of Batman and his son Damian Wayne, who becomes one of the Robins. Next up is the TV series called Booster Gold which elucidates the ‘imposter syndrome’ of superheroes as Gunn Says. Then James Gunn shares the title Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow which deals with the story of Kara Zor-El. And finally comes Swamp Thing, which is an almost horror-like movie that is the origin of DC’s Swamp Thing.

Since this is all James Gunn has shared which is just the beginning of the 8-10 year plan he has in mind, it’s interesting enough for fans as Marvel has been the one in the spotlight for years. Justice League: The New Frontier could be the Avengers: Endgame equivalent for James Gunn which he ‘secretly’ plans while writing the rest of the DCU and its characters.
