SUMMARY

  • Prime Video's Fallout trailer was finally released to the masses, and as well as looking like something straight out of the games, it also included a familiar face; Dogmeat.
  • Dogmeat was one of the most prominent characters in Bethesda's Fallout 3.
  • The show certainly looks to continue the game's penchant for violence and gore.

It’s finally here, as Prime Video has dropped the biggest trailer of the year so far, blowing us all away with their Fallout TV show – at least on first impressions anyway. Select journalists were invited to attend a behind-the-scenes press conference last night, which has allowed us to take more time to break apart the trailer and pick apart some of the more fun easter eggs present, including one massive one that’ll please the most stalwart of Fallout 3 fans.

Prime Video Looks to the Past as Much as the Present

fallout

Past and present have always been a huge theme in the Fallout universe, with many stories focused on not repeating the same mistakes others made years prior. It seems that this looking back mantra is somewhat followed by the show as well, with a clear past and present storyline going on for Walter Goggins ‘The Ghoul’, who is more involved than first thought, with his normal human appearance showing up before the nukes went off, presumably as a Vault Salesman.

However, it’s not this nod to the past we’re interested in, but the few select frames of a familiar canine instead. During the trailer – watchable below – the die-hard and casual fans of the franchise alike will recognize what looks like Dogmeat, everyone’s favorite companion from Fallout 3!

Companions are nothing new in the Fallout universe, with some of the biggest and best becoming iconic in gaming lore – think Nick Valentine, for example -, but seeing Dogmeat on screen with a severed hand in his mouth no less, just hit different.

Of course, the chances that this is the same incarnation as everyone’s favorite friendly canine are minimal, but if nothing else it proves that the show is desperate to follow the lore of the source material and stay faithful.

Todd Howard, Lisa Joy, and Jonathan Nolan may be the Fallout Holy Trinity

During that same press conference last night, there were a lot of details thrown casually about that’d make for interesting reading. Todd Howard is considered one of, if not the biggest influence on RPGs in recent times, and his obsessive nature is well-documented.

Well, according to the man himself, this was matched by the fervor and obsessiveness of Jonathan Nolan, executive producer on the Prime Video Fallout TV show, and fan of the franchise:

“We like to say when we make the games that we obsess over every pixel. And Jonah and crew, they obsessed over every pixel of every frame, just to make it authentic.”

This goes a long way to understanding exactly why that trailer felt like playing the games, and even though the tone of the show was one of the hardest parts to get right, according to Nolan, it certainly seems they all understand the source material, but also how to translate it to the big screen. That power armor looks mighty fine, don’t you think?
