Swifties were anticipating that Taylor Swift would finally be announcing Reputation- Taylor’s Version, the only remaining album yet to get a re-recording. But in a surprise and shocking announcement at the 2024 Grammy while getting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift announced a new studio album titled The Tortured Poets Department.
Her eleventh studio album, the announcement of it has already created considerable buzz with fans wondering which of her ex-boyfriends’ tales will be in Swift’s newest album. And one fan seems to have decoded it already from the title, which might have something to do with Swift’s ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
Taylor Swift Announces New Album While Winning Her 13th Grammy
Taylor Swift is yet again the star of the night as she took home the Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Awestruck and shocked, she gave a heartwarming speech thanking all her fans while also announcing her newest album,
“Okay this is my 13th Grammy. Which is my lucky number… if I’ve ever told you that. I know that the way the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion from the fans. So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I have been keeping from you for the last two years. Which is that my brand new album comes out April 19, it’s called The Tortured Poets Department, I’m going to go and post the cover right now back stage, thank you I love you.”
And if that wasn’t enough, the pop star also won her 14th Grammy Award, winning her fourth Album of the Year award for Midnights, creating history. As of now, Swift is the only person in history to have won the Grammy for Album of the Year four times, leaving behind numerous musical legends in the race (via NY Times).
As fans celebrate her success and wins, hoping for many more in the future, many of them can’t help but think that her newest album is about her ex, Joe Alwyn. While the anticipation rages on, one of her fans seems convinced that it is definitely something to do with Alwyn.
Taylor Swift’s Newest Album Might Be About Joe Alwyn
If there is one thing that Taylor Swift is known for (other than being the queen of performances and writing the most banger lyrics) it is encapsulating many of her past romances into perfectly rhyming songs, even when the said relationships may have quite a bit of bad blood (see Teen Vogue).
Swifties being Swifties love to decode and investigate as to which of her songs or albums are about which of her exes. So when the Anti Hero singer announced her newest album The Tortured Poets Department at the 2024 Grammy Awards just mere hours ago, her fans were quick to react, trying to find out which of her exes made it to her next album.
And one fan on X seems to have decoded it. As per the tweet and as per Joe Alwyn‘s GQ interview, Alwyn has a Whatsapp group with his friends including actor Paul Mescal named The Tortured Man Club. The group chat was apparently created after Alwyn starred in Sally Rooney’s novel’s on-screen adaptation Conversation with Friends, as Nick. And so to connect him with another of Rooney’s leading men, a mutual friend created the group adding Mescal, who starred as Connell in the 2020 series Normal People (another on-screen adaptation of one of Rooney’s novels).
And so while the group chat’s name is a reflection of his and Mescal’s respective on-screen characters, Swift’s similar-sounding album name has prompted many of her fans to speculate that Swift’s eleventh album will also have references to her past 6-year-long romance with the actor.
After already reportedly writing songs like Lover, Lavender Haze, or London Boy about The Favorite star (see Life Style Asia), if The Tortured Poets Department is, in fact about Alwyn, it will be one in a long list of songs she has already written about exes and lovers.
