The older God of War games established themselves as one of PlayStation’s popular mascots that represent engaging action with solid storytelling. The gaming community recently saw a fan’s attempt at recreating God of War 2 in Unreal Engine 5. The video has been receiving a lot of praise and sets a healthy expectation for what the remake of older games can look like.
While there’s no official announcement regarding the old games, these titles explore a slightly different journey. Even before Kratos’ venture into the Nine Realms, these games were knitted in Greek mythology and defined many generations of PlayStation consoles.
The Idea Behind Creating a God of War 2 Remake Fan-Made Trailer
The creative minds behind this fan-made teaser belong to TeaserPlay. In the description of the video, the uploader explains the thoughts that went into making this video:
In this video we are going to imagine God of War Remake, A great nostalgic game that we need now in next gen graphics, we tried to use all the power and features of Unreal Engine 5 to recreate this such as Lumen, Nanite, Path Tracer and Ray Tracing.
Hopefully, this video can give the overall picture of a possible remake and clarify the expectations of the fans from it for the developers.
The quality of this fan-made teaser is a top-notch example of what Unreal Engine 5 and a passion for remastering older games can do for a new generation of gamers. The trailer is in 4K resolution and uses a camera angle that somewhat resembles the new games in the series, like God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.
Despite Kratos’ journey changing drastically through the different games, going back to the roots of what made him the character he is now will truly be an exciting venture. Rightfully so the technology behind it is a powerful engine that takes advantage of modern consoles and PC setups.
How God of War 2 Explores Kratos’ Origins
Before God of War explored Norse folklore and mythology, the early games focused on Kratos’ journey as he became a god among other gods, on his vengeful quest through Olympus. In the early games, the game’s narrative was often told by Gaia through a voice-over during important moments. One of which gave players a brief idea about Kratos’ journey so far in God of War 2:
By defeating Ares, Kratos, the once mortal warrior, became the new God of War. However, Kratos soon found himself alone on Olympus, shunned by his fellow Gods.
The game came out on PlayStation 2 back in 2007. The main storyline revolves around Kratos coming to terms with the deeds from his past, as he works under Ares. Characters like Athena act as grounding anchors who ask Kratos to look at the world around him in a pragmatic way, but Kratos goes out of his way to not listen to reason and assists his Spartan Army instead.
The consequences of this follow closely as players progress through the story. Much of the gameplay focuses on aggressive fight combos and using weapons like Athena’s Blades to give Kratos an edge over different enemy types. During the time of its release, God of War mastered the essence of hack-and-slash combat that made it stand out from other action and fighting games.
While the recent games with their larger-than-life perspectives of the Nine Realms are certainly enjoyable, there’s always a fair expectation for older games to be worthy of a remake. Especially games that are rooted in the franchise’s idea of world-building and combat systems. This fan-made video proves how amazing the older games can look and bring out older ideas in a newer light.
