Gotham Knights was released in 2022, and its launch was disappointing for most. Initially revealed at the DC Fandome event in 2020, the hype for the game was skyrocketing just before its release. The premise of the title saw the death of Batman and his distress call to other members of the Bat Family: Redhood, Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing.

The game also featured a co-op mode, which allowed players to team up with one other friend to play together. Many iconic comic book villains appeared in the title, including Ra’s Al Ghul, Talia Al Ghul, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and Harley Quinn. The leading group of antagonists was a council known as the Court of Owls, which fans will be able to recognize as they are also trendy from the comic books.

WB Montreal, the team behind Batman: Arkham Origins, had developed the game, and it had a lukewarm response. A year later, fans are discussing whether the game was bashed appropriately or was just a victim of unnecessary hate and unfair comparison.

The Batman: Arkham Subreddit Discusses Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights has three playable characters.
Gotham Knights has four playable characters.

The Batman: Arkham subreddit is a funny place to discover. The members are always seen engaging in ironically funny banter. In the subreddit, which calls itself a madhouse, there is no Joker, only “Jonkler,” as the community likes to call the iconic DC Comics villain. As per the inmates of the “aslume,” Batman has no ears and is called “Man.” All this isn’t even the tip of the subreddit’s iceberg.

When the community isn’t engaging in memes relating to characters who have appeared, some sincere discussions happen around the games, characters, and artists who have appeared in them. One such discussion happened in this post, which sees a Redditor by the handle Darren_Blaze asking if the game was that bad. It seems that the community appreciated the question.

As a result, the post received almost two and a half thousand upvotes within 20 hours. More than 450 community members commented on the open-world multiplayer co-op title. These were some responses from the community in the comment section:

It was alright. Definitely not on the same level as the aslume[sic] series.I got it discounted…single player was 60 fps, and then as soon as the co-op session began the frames would go waaaay down.

Speaking of the gameplay further, the user wrote that they found the combat enjoyable, and while the co-op felt rough, it was still fun. They also mentioned that they found the story to be underwhelming.

The combat in Gotham Knights feels underwhelming and sluggish.

The other comments mentioned that the game was mediocre and not that bad but got repetitive at times, and the gameplay loop didn’t offer many new activities to perform. Other players shared similar opinions about the game being underwhelming.

Another user had this to say as the game made its way to the PS Plus Extra catalog:

I played it because it’s on PS plus but my god they [the characters in game] move so slow

Per another Redditor who commented on the post, the game wasn’t well-received but deserves credit where it’s due. They said:

The city is great, really like the atmosphere. Bike travelling is slower than expected but it’s okay…I got the game on sale and at that price it’s definitely worth checking out. Just don’t expect a high tier game like Arkham, this game is like a 7/10 for me.

It isn’t any surprise that the game was constantly compared with the titles by Rocksteady because players are used to experiencing the quality that the studio offers with those games. However, Knights stood on its own two feet, even if it lost balance more often. While not great, the entire narrative is a breath of fresh air. The game has to be tried once without being compared to any other DC Comics games with an open mind to understand what it offers.
