Squid Game is one of the most popular Netflix Series. The South Korean series was initially released in September 2021. Another TV series based on the show’s format was released in November 2023, titled Squid Game: The Challenge, which was much more lighthearted and was based on an actual harmless competition. The show involves similar mechanics, but the contestants do not incur any physical harm, so it is suitable for a much broader viewer base.
The Challenge did not receive good reviews, especially from fans of the original. The shows could not even hit a 6-point rating out of 10 on IMDB. Many fans accused the OTT giant of overutilizing and cashing in on the original’s popularity. Now, another form of media related to the show has been announced. This time, it is a game.
Squid Game and other video game titles announced by Netflix Games
Initially announced by a blog post hosted on Netflix’s official news website. The post was titled “What’s Next for Netflix Games” and discussed the multimedia company’s plans for its gaming venture. At the end of the post, there was a mention that the title is being developed.
A succinct description of the title was mentioned, and what the game will offer, its format, and mode of play are unknown. The only sentence which was mentioned was as follows:
A game set in the universe of Squid Game, in which you can compete with other players in games from the hit series.
It is worth noting that The Challenge wasn’t nearly as successful as the original Korean show; despite that, the OTT company has announced the second season of the game show. The first season concluded on December 7. It is worth noting that other titles were announced to be coming to the OTT giant’s Games catalog. The post also clearly stated that the platform was intended to be a destination for “must-play games.” Here are some other titles that are supposed to be coming out on the platform in 2024:

The company’s games venture began in 2021 and saw the streaming giant, mainly known for its OTT offerings, acquire gaming studios and its own to execute its plans further. How fans reacted to Netflix’s Squid Game video game announcement
Since the title is based on a very user-acclaimed series, it is natural for fans to express their opinion and voice their mind on the announcements. When various Twitter accounts like DiscussingFilm reported the announcement, fans commented on the post, and some comments were genuinely hilarious.

Another fan stated that the company was capitalizing on and “milking” the IP as hard as possible. Many other fans agreed with the statement as they exclaimed that the franchise was being pushed too hard. Some other fans went one step ahead in banter and joked that Roblox has already come up with its title based on the game show, and the OTT company is just copying them now:

Some fans voiced their demands and said that the company should produce a new season of the hit show instead of rolling out less severe spinoffs and gaming titles. Some were even skeptical and suspected that the game was a horrible idea. But some fans, on the other hand, were genuinely excited about the title.
