Early last year, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz announced he was leaving CD Projekt RED to start his gaming studio, Rebel Wolves. Tomaszkiewicz mentioned the motive behind it was to gain more freedom to evolve the cRPG genre.
More details of the studio’s first AAA title have come to light, with the title DawnWalker: Origins. The title is said to be an open-world, story-driven RPG. A job posting and news of an investment in the studio have revealed more details about the upcoming debut IP from Rebel Wolves. A few artworks, pre-alpha footage screengrabs, and the logo that’s trademarked for the game are also among the leaked content.
Details about the AAA title by former CD Projekt RED dev
Well-known video games researcher Kurakasis has dropped a host of details about the first IP coming out of Rebel Wolves. About the title for his first AAA title, Kurakasis mentioned it’s based on the company’s trademarks. A couple of domains have been recently registered under the names ‘dawnwalkergame’ and ‘dawnwalkeroriginsthegame’.
As for the game itself, it’s said to be a story-driven RPG that’s set in a “dark fantasy universe“. As per a job linked on the Rebel Wolves’ LinkedIn page, there is a recruitment going on for a Gameplay Designer with the description stating a AAA game under development that’s being built on Unreal Engine 5. The game is also revealed to be coming out to PC and the latest gen consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Late last year, the Warsaw-based Tomaszkiewicz’s studio acquired investment from a Chinese IT company, NetEase Games. With this investment, NetEase Games’ investments have reached 18 other PC and Console Gaming companies. Tomaszkiewicz had revealed that even with the investment Rebel Wolves will remain a “creatively independent and team-managed studio.”
A recruitment post linked on the studio’s LinkedIn page mentions a requirement for a Gameplay Designer. Describing the role, the post mentions the candidate will be responsible for a “varied range of gameplay systems” which includes open-world elements, exploration mechanics, itemization mechanics, and character progression systems among other aspects.
The unannounced title was described as being a saga with an evolving genre and becoming a “stepping stone in the history of RPGs“. The game is said to have no microtransactions and has also reportedly entered the Alpha stage of development. Kurakasis also mentions a team of 100 people worked in the game three months back.
The debut IP will not be as big as The Witcher
In an interview with a Polish website last year, Tomaszkiewicz had described his vision for his studio’s first AAA title as being the “Holy Grail” of Role-Playing Games. He had mentioned that the overall scope of the game would not be as massive as The Witcher but expected the number of quests to be a lot more in comparison.
Tomaszkiewicz mentioned the debut title will change a lot of elements typically in an RPG genre without revealing the details. He also mentioned the decision behind choosing Unreal Engine 5 was the belief that a good third-party engine is more “convenient and better” compared to an in-house tech for his project. Having previously been involved with Cyberpunk 2077 as a Secondary Game Director, Tomaszkiewicz mentioned giving his first project enough time and not rushing the release.
Among the leaked content related to the game included a logo filed with the trademark for the IP, a couple of pre-alpha screenshots of the game, and a few artwork. The leaked content also had an actual picture of a kitchen.
That specific picture had a sarcastic message that said more details about the game would be revealed in time and that there was no way the team would accidentally reveal details about the upcoming game. Rebel Wolves will be hoping there will be no further leaks from the studio, given the year’s been filled with leaks from several studios.
