Game of Thrones has left us all a memorable experience. Whether fans loved it or despised it, we cannot deny that there are characters whom we are all forever attached to. The show has so many interesting characters with who we have shared the journey. Some of them though started out with so many potentials but were nearly destroyed towards the end.

Jamie Lannister is a fan-favorite character, and there is no doubt that he is considered one of the best and most significant personalities in the show. However, we cannot conceal the fact that his character soared high and then dipped, and the next thing we know, he’s under the bricks. Here are some proofs of Jamie Lannister’s wasted potential in Game of Thrones:

He Joined The Kingsguard

Jamie decided to join the Kingsguard as an order from The Mad King, which reduced his right to becoming Tywin Lannister’s successor. The Kingslayer, as he is called, initially wanted this to not marry him off. He wanted to stay in King’s Landing, that is all.

Because Jaime could no longer be the heir, Tywin feels embarrassed to give the title to Tyrion Lannister. Jaime, in a sense, has let a great opportunity slip away from his grasp.

His Words Cost Him His Hand

Everyone in the kingdom knows how great of a swordsman Jaime is. His skill is unmatched, so when his hand was chopped off, he was left to adapt to a new fighting technique. Somehow this misfortune changed his behavior, and in turn, he became a more relatable character.

He tried to talk out his way from the prison he and Brienne were stuck in. When he was found out lying, he was punished, and his hand was severed. This, later on, became his trademark.

He Watched His Daughter Die In His Arms

Myrcella Baratheon’s death is one of the saddest and most unexpected scenes in Game of Thrones. Upon rescuing her from Dorne, she died of poison which was previously planned by Ellaria Sand. Jaime could not do anything but watch his own daughter die in his arms.

During Myrcella’s last few breaths, she recognized Jaime as her father. Although it brought a brief joy in Jamie’s heart, it is too late now to become a proper father to her.

He Charged Towards Daenerys And Her Dragons

One of the most intense scenes in Game of Thrones took place on the battlefield between the Lannister’s army and Daenerys Targaryen’s army. In this scene, Jamie saw an opportunity to kill the Dragon Queen.

He charged, but Drogon was ready to defend his mother by dragonfire. Good thing Ser Bronn was quick to move, and he saved Jamie from his supposed death because of his poor judgment.

He Chose Cersei Over His Character’s Progress

One of the most foolish decisions Jamie has ever done is coming back to his queen. He was already growing into a much better character, with a new life and people around him.

But, like all fools in love, he decided to leave Brienne and the would-be life he would have had. It truly felt like an insult to injury for the audience seeing Jaime throw away all his character progress.
