The highly anticipated video game sequel Alan Wake 2 has been in development for more than a decade, and fans of the original just can’t wait anymore, so it just felt right to finish the huge gaming showcase with such a fitting title. The Gamescom 2023 host Geoff Keighley introduced Alan Wake 2 by mentioning how we met the new playable character, Saga Anderson, in the previous trailer, but we truly want to know where the titular character’s story will take him next. According to Lake, Alan Wake has been stuck in the “nightmare dimension” for the “last 13 years,” ever since the events of the first game. The Creative Director then mentioned how the developers at Remedy are incorporating live action footage into the game as well, along with calling the “dark place” a “dream reality,” which keeps “drawing from Alan’s mind, his thoughts, his fears,” and “his writing.”

The Gamescom 2023 presentation gave us further information about the titular character, such as how he has lived in New York City for the past years writing crime fiction novels, so the Dark Place takes the shape of NYC. The director continued that they “integrated” live-action footage into the game to really showcase the “dreamlike nature of the darkness.” The short on-stage interview with Sam Lake was followed by a brand new trailer for Alan Wake 2.

The Alan Wake 2 World Premiere Trailer at Gamescom 2023 Opening Night Live starts off with the words:

In a horror story, there are only victims and monsters. And the trick is to not end up as either.”

The trailer heavily features and incorporates live action footage, as mentioned before by Sam Lake, and shows Alan Wake’s mind deteriorating in the infamous Dark Place.

The Gamescom 2023 trailer for Alan Wake 2 further shows the titular “fictional writer” attending a talk show with a horrified and confused look on his face because, according to the host in the trailer, “he is trapped in a nightmare” as he desperately tries to find the “manuscript of a novel” that he has apparently written himself, but has forgotten all about it. The second playable character, FBI agent Saga Anderson, also makes an appearance by asking Wake if he wrote some specific “pages,” with Alan Wake replying that he is “trying to remember it.” In the next shot, as Wake is confronted by a man and called a “killer,” he screams that they “have got the wrong man.”

That scene is followed by some disturbing imagery, after which Wake says that it’s his “fault” that “it got out,” followed by Anderson claiming that Wake “has a double.” The Gamescom 2023 trailer also features some intense gameplay footage, after which Wake says that he wants to get out of this “story.” Let’s just say the Alan Wake 2 trailer left the audience on the perfect note, as it finally releases on October 27.
