Like all good things, Stranger Things, the beloved TV series created by Matt and Ross Duffer, is coming to an end. The fifth and final season of Netflix’s sci-fi horror drama series has finally started filming, much to the delight of horror fans who have been waiting for its return. Even though the plot is so shrouded in mystery, fans are still making every effort to gain further insight. And, Gaten Matarazzo, who has taken on the role of Dustin Henderson (one of Will Byers’ friends), recently dropped a bombshell about the upcoming season 5.
Even though there have been a number of tragic incidents and character deaths on the show during its four seasons, Matarazzo believes that a higher death count would have made the action more intense. The young star, 21, stated during a panel event at MegaCon Orlando that he wanted to see more character deaths, which would raise the stakes on the show.
But did he unintentionally reveal that none of our beloved main characters are likely to meet their demise?
Stranger Things Star Gaten Matarazzo Craves Danger: Is He Spoiling Season 5’s Ending?
Gaten Matarazzo, best known for his portrayal of the endearing Dustin Henderson, is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He stated that he prefers gritty and intense storylines, stressing the significance of major character deaths to increase the stakes during a panel event at MegaCon Orlando 2024 (via CBR).
The most intriguing fan question of the entire panel, though, came from someone asking if the actor would alter anything on the show if he could. To which Matarazzo responded:
“It might sound messed up, but we should kill more people. This show would be so much better if the stakes were much higher, like at any moment any of these kids can kick it. I feel like we’re all too safe.”
The stakes should be increased by having some of the cast members killed off, in his opinion, as many of them are too safe. If so, is it a sign of what’s in store for season 5, or is it an indication of something entirely different?
Whether it is through deadly surprises or character development, one thing is for sure: Stranger Things’ upcoming season will definitely entice viewers with its charm, suspense, and supernatural mayhem.
Gaten Matarazzo Discussed The Finale Of Netflix’s Stranger Things
During a 2023 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gaten Matarazzo admitted to Jimmy Fallon that he was deeply afraid that Stranger Things would end after five seasons. Since the first episode of Netflix’s sci-fi horror drama TV series, the actor has been one of the main characters.
In reference to the show’s finale, he confessed:
“It’s interesting to constantly just be reminded how much people have resonated with it. I mean, it’s something that’s so important to all of us and has just been essential to the growth that I’ve had over all of my teenage years into my 20s. It’s the defining aspect of the past 10 years of my life, practically the past decade.”
Fallon questioned Matarazzo about how “bittersweet” it would be to leave the show. The latter answered:
“Of course it is. There’s kind of an excitement there because you always want to wrap it up and see how these characters are going to finally develop one last time, and how they’re going to finish their journeys. But also there’s like a deep fear. Not only has it been amazing, but it’s been pretty great job security for a while. Back to freelance.”
His acting resume also includes voicing Boris the Dragon in the 2022 animated fantasy comedy flick My Father’s Dragon, as well as starring in Oran Zegman’s film Honor Society.
Well, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, also starring David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, and Noah Schnapp, among others, is expected to be released in 2025.
All four seasons of Stranger Things are streaming on Netflix.
