Cliff Bleszinski sat with FandomWire for an interview where he answered questions about the Gears of War franchise, among other things, and how he wants to see it end. And it is something that will make fans of the series feel like he should be back working on the project.

Cliff Bleszinski served as the designer on the first three games in the franchise before he left Epic Games in 2012, which initially owned the franchise before the rights were acquired by Microsoft. Bleszinski wanted to take a break and later founded a development studio in 2014.

The original trilogy ended in a good place, and since then, there have been two more titles in the franchise. When asked about where he would like to see the series end and how he would finish it if he had the “opportunity and control.”

Bleszinski said that the series is about the war and its consequences, and the ending of the series should be able to depict that accurately and hopes that developer The Coalition nails that. Here’s what he said:

My friend, Joss Whedon [creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer] told me once “Buffy suffer, show good.” Gears of War is ultimately about the horrors of war and the loss that it incurs.

Dom having to put down his wife and later sacrificing himself for Delta Squad, for example. All I hope for is that The Coalition makes me feel something. Any great work of art has to have heart.

He further said he’s open to returning to work on the franchise, adding that “they have my number,” referring to Xbox and Phil Spencer. Bleszinski had previously said that the franchise needs a reboot if the developer wants to see it go anywhere and turn it into something like God of War.

Bleszinski on the Franchise Going Third-Party

Halo and Gears of War are the main franchises that have placed Xbox in the place it is in the console market, and when asked about how he feels about the franchise not being an exclusive for long, Bleszinski said that he believes Phil Spencer is “gunning” for a Netflix-like model.

He further added that Netflix does have some exclusives, but it is winning by being available on “every platform.” There have been reports in the past couple of months that the franchise may go third-party, and after a few of the first-party games are already available on PlayStation and Nintendo, it may become a reality.

It cannot be said for certain if the franchise will surely be going to other platforms, but it probably will be more successful due to it. However, only time will tell.
