Gege Akutami’s magnum opus, Jujutsu Kaisen, is experiencing a hot streak, with season 2 being one of the best anime shows of the year. It has been a few months since season 2 began. The light-hearted plot soon took a dark turn, and from that point on, there was no light. Bodies keep on piling up, and even though they are grief-stricken, fans cannot help but get sucked into the whirlpool created by Gege Akutami.
Jujutsu Kaisen creator has time and again proved that they are one of the very best in the manga industry with great plot and character development, and on top of that, they have the courage to kill fan-favourite characters for the betterment of their story. Their latest achievement was the introduction of one of the most hated characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, Mei Mei.
Mei Mei’s Character Showcases Gege Akutami’s Versatility
In Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, episode 22, Metamorphosis, featured Mei Mei and his brother Ui Ui. They were fighting against the Smallpox Deity, and after dealing with it, they were enjoyed in a luxurious hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Suddenly, she got a phone call. The caller thanked her for getting them to the place that she promised. After that, she also told the caller to sell any existing stocks and real estate that she had in Japan.

The parallel between Nanami and Mei Mei is one of the best character parallels introduced by Gege.

Moreover, she had already converted her Yen. It confirmed that Mei Mei had no intention of returning to Japan amidst the crisis at Shibuya. Due to this, the Jujutsu Kaisen fandom hate her. Being a Grade One Jujutsu sorcerer, she could have helped her fellow sorcerers, but she is busy with herself. She is the embodiment of hatred and selfishness. Mei Mei only loves herself and sees what is best for herself. She lacks any kind of morals.
Even though Mei Mei is hated so much, Gege Akutami has once again proved that they can do anything with their skills. After creating a fan-favourite character like Nanami Kento, who puts others first and does his best to protect his peers, even at the cost of his life, they went ahead with Mei Mei, who is his complete opposite and does what is best for her.

Mei Mei’s introduction has kept Jujutsu Kaisen at the top of the anime headlines. Gege Akutami’s versatility has proved once again that there is nothing that they cannot do. Mei Mei is an example that everything has a good and an evil/dark side. She showcases the latter. People like Nanami Kento and Aoi Todo showcase Jujutsu’s good side, but Mei Mei showcases the dark side.
She practices Jujutsu only for money. Even though she loves her little brother, she does not think twice before putting his life in danger. But at the end of the day, maybe it was important to introduce a character like Mei Mei to feature the dark side. It will help to balance the parallels in Jujutsu Kaisen. While Nanami was saving money to go to Malaysia, Mei Mei achieved it with her dark motives. Maybe Mei Mei is everything that Nanami is not, and vice versa.
