Jujutsu Kaisen has a range of characters many find themselves intrigued by. The vast array of personalities presented in characters that may appear for even one chapter or an episode is truly a work of art. This sense of individuality presented by each character has led for the fans to praise Gege Akutami’s skills both as an artist and as a writer.
Whether it is a male character, a female character, another gender, or even a robot, praise is of the utmost liking. So what brings a sense of confusion to many may be why there is so much hatred for Mei Mei. Ever since she was first introduced in the first season, there has been a bittersweet response to her character.

Mei Mei Stands Out in Jujutsu Kaisen
Although Mei Mei was not as hated in the first season, Shibuya Arc of Jujutsu Kaisen gives a better insight into who she and her brother Ui Ui are. The character was seen in the Premature Death/ Hidden Inventory arc, but the hate that followed after the latest arc has been truly astonishing. It is also to be noted that Mei Mei was no favorite of the fans even in the manga.
Every character in Jujutsu Kaisen is shown with flaws. No one is perfect and that is what makes them human. Even if they are cursed spirits, there are certain flaws that connect them to the fans more than others. However, Mei Mei’s flaw was her greed and selfishness. Negative traits can be shown in the light of various positive ones, a balance perfectly portrayed in characters such as Gojo Satoru and Fushiguro Megumi. Mei Mei had a stark imbalance in that case. Despite her need to work only when money was involved, it was the way she made that into her personality that did not sit well with fans.
Mei Mei is not a Hero of the People
Almost every character in Jujutsu Kaisen goes through an in-depth bildungsroman, all except Mei Mei. During the Shibuya Incident, this exact flaw is shown in its finest form when she leaves all her comrades in the middle of a fight. Ui Ui might be the only one who sees Mei Mei in a glowing light. She abandons everyone and runs to Malaysia just as things begin to get worse for everyone.
Mei Mei as a character has more flaws than she does things that can redeem her. Even the villains of the series are given meaning for their actions. Whether it is Sukuna, Kenjaku, or Mahito, each and every villain has a driving force. Mei Mei is no villain, yet she is hated as more than one. Leaving the sorcerers in the middle of the fight may have been the last straw for many fans. Especially considering how much thought Gege Akutami puts in the female characters.
