Greta Gerwig to Serve as Jury President at Cannes Film Festival
Adding onto her incredible achievements of 2023, Greta Gerwig is now making headlines for her role at the Cannes Film Festival. According to a statement issued by the film festival, the Barbie helmer is set to preside over the competition jury at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Becoming the first American female director to serve as jury president, Gerwig is setting her records straight.
“A heroine of our modern times, Greta Gerwig shakes up the status quo between a highly codified cinema industry and an era that is demanding greater scrutiny. Yesterday, ambassador of independent American cinema, today at the summit of worldwide box office success, Greta Gerwig manages to combine what was previously judged to be incompatible.” Cannes said via The Hollywood Reporter.
Following this announcement, Gerwig is now set to become the first American female director to be Cannes Jury President. The acclaimed filmmaker is only the second female director to take over the post, since Jane Campion in 2014. She’s also the second American woman to achieve this honor since Olivia de Haviland in 1965.
“As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be…I am stunned and thrilled and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury. I cannot wait to see what journeys are in store for all of us!” Gerwig stated.
This is going to be an incredible achievement for the director as this will mark her first walk on the Cannes red carpet, in an official capacity.
Greta Gerwig’s Record-Breaking Achievements of 2023
While Greta Gerwig becoming the first American female director in Cannes festival history to serve as jury president is indeed a big deal, it cannot undermine her previous achievements. Shedding light upon her record-breaking year and multiple achievements of 2023, we have assembled all her latest accomplishments.
Achieving many of her first timers as a female director, Greta Gerwig initially set her record straight in 2023, by releasing her pink party, Barbie. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie competed against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and turned into a box office bonanza. Bagging a billion-dollar success, Gerwig became a household name.
Not only that, but Barbie’s success also turned her into the first woman to surpass the one billion mark at the worldwide box office. Previously, all the movies that skyrocketed at the box office were helmed by male directors, leaving Gerwig to be the first of her kind. Now, the director is set to break fresh ground in May 2024, with her recently bestowed honor.
