Why Did GTA 6’s Development Take So Long?

Akin to GTA 5, GTA 6 will also feature multiple protagonists.
Akin to GTA 5, GTA 6 will also feature multiple protagonists.

GTA 5 celebrated its 10th Anniversary in September this year. The game has since then retained a massive player base, with many players immersing themselves in GTA Online. Ten years without a game in the franchise passed. double the time between GTA 4, released in 2008, and GTA 5.

It could be argued that Rockstar Games was taking its time with the next in the franchise because they wanted to do it right. After all, the franchise and IP are worth billions of dollars. But when the leaks for the game happened they confirmed the reports, which stated the game would do something done never before.

GTA 6 also carries not one but two responsibilities with its release. The previous entry was a game-changer for the genre, the studio, and the franchise. This one had to keep up with the last one’s tone, flair and excellence. The second expectation from the game was that it would be innovative and offer something new to the players.

Both of these are incredibly difficult to fulfill individually, let alone simultaneously. Apart from this, it was rumored last year that GTA 6 would have the franchise’s first female protagonist. This was reportedly done to clean up the studio’s frat-boy culture. This was a step in the right direction for the franchise and the studio.

The leaks, which occurred in September last year and were subsequently confirmed by Rockstar Games’ official handle, confirmed this. Footage of a female playable character model surfaced in the leaks, only for the footage to be removed from social media platforms and game forums. But it is refreshing for one of the most iconic franchises to be more inclusive now.

It is evident that there was a lot of delay, but now that the game’s trailer will finally come out next month, we’re counting down the days until we can finally get to feast our eyes on the most anticipated game of this decade!
