Walt Disney is currently on its way to bringing live-action movies for animated feature films. The studios are looking forward to making remakes of Moana and The Little Mermaid which will soon grace our screens. Speaking of the Halle Bailey starer live action a lot of racist criticism has already surfaced on the internet after its first look dropped. The internet is criticizing the makers for casting a black woman as a little mermaid.

Halle Bailey has already addressed the backlash surrounding the film and she wasn’t actually shocked as she saw it coming. Many fans even appreciated seeing Bailey as the beloved mermaid and praised her performance in the trailer. The film will be a remake of the 1989 movie about the Ariel character. Even Harry Styles would have been a part of this film, but he has his own reasons to decline.

Harry Styles has made a successful career in the music industry. Right from being a part of the famous one-direction band to rising as a solo artist he has done it all. Apart from singing, nowadays he is also into acting and has been a part of several movies. The films include Don’t Worry Darling, My Policeman, Eternals, Dunkirk, and so on. Recently he was offered to play Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid but he chose to turn it down.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director of the film Robert Marshall revealed why Harry Styles didn’t want to do the role. According to Marshall, Harry “really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker.” Currently, the role is passed on to Jonah Hauer King who will be playing the Disney Prince in this film.

Prince Eric’s personality is kind of like hopeless romantic and sweet. But according to the director, Watermelon Sugar refused to take the role of some darker characters. In an interview with The Face magazine, the 29-year-old gave his take on why he didn’t want to play the Disney prince. He added that he met the team and he liked them, but now he has his music career on the priority list. 

“I want to put music out and focus on that for a while. But everyone involved in it was amazing. So I think it’s going to be great. I’ll enjoy watching it, I’m sure.”

The official release date of The Little Mermaid is said to be May 26th, 2023. The film will be a theatrical release as of now but will be further released on the OTT platform Disney+.
