Meryl Streep who jokingly called Harvey Weinstein – “God”, during her Golden Globes speech, condemned the Hollywood producer for his alleged s*xual assault allegations. Although the entertainment industry is powered by daily gossip, it was highly unlikely that the actress was unaware of Weinstein’s reputation.
However, despite previously appreciating the producer, Meryl Streep went against Harvey Weinstein once she learned about his deeds after he was taken into custody. Following the footsteps of other actresses who went after Weinstein and spoke out loud about being a victim of his crimes, even Streep released a statement calling out Weinstein’s shameful acts as “disgraceful”.
Meryl Streep Once Hailed Harvey Weinstein As God
Being in the entertainment industry for decades, Meryl Streep has done some incredible movies that shaped her Hollywood career and turned her into a globally acclaimed star. However, one of her roles in her long list of filmography was her most desired project, which even won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.
Recalling her role as Margaret Thatcher in 2011’s The Iron Lady, for which she was honored with a Golden Globe, Meryl Streep made a speech that surfaced after years. Following Harvey Weinstein’s alleged s*xual assault accusations, Streep’s speech broke the internet, as people recalled the actress calling the disgraceful producer, “god”.
“I just wanna thank my agent Kevin Huvane and God, Harvey Weinstein, the punisher, Old Testament, I guess” Meryl Streep shared.
Following the Golden Globes, Meryl Streep even won the Oscar for the same role, which apparently Harvey Weinstein lobbied hard for. Therefore, Streep was obliged to publically hail Weinstein for his help. However, fast forward to the time when the producer first made headlines for his shameful acts, Streep blatantly denied being aware of Weinstein’s awful reputation.
Harvey Weinstein’s Accusations Shocked Meryl Streep
Steering clear her way from litigation for being surprisingly close to Harvey Weinstein, Meryl Streep completely denied knowing about the producer’s deeds. Claiming to be surprised by the accusations, despite being in the gossip-powered Hollywood, Streep issued a statement to confess her lack of knowledge about the ongoing alleged assaults.
“The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed and those whose good and worthy causes he supported. The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.” Meryl Streep shared.
Despite subtly disgracing Harvey Weinstein through her statement, the actress also praised the producer for his support. Streep claimed,
“Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally.”
The actress further stated,
“I didn’t know about these other offenses…I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts.”
Further, Streep tactically cleared her name for being ignorant of Weinstein’s crimes, by sharing, “If everybody knew, I don’t believe…media would have neglected for decades to write about it.” However, in the end, it was not just Streep but several other renowned Hollywood celebrities who decided to remain silent.
