Fighting against Hollywood’s atrocities and misogyny for years, Rose McGowan was finally able to expose Hollywood’s abusive producer Harvey Weinstein, when he was tried in court in 2020. After years of struggle and confession about her detailed s*xual assault, the actress created an impact that helped other celebrities open up about their experiences with Weinstein.

Although the book majorly dealt with the abuses she faced in the industry, the title seemed apt for the actress, as she certainly has been courageous throughout her life. Before exposing Weinstein, Rose McGowan opened up about her childhood days and recalled the hardships she faced that shaped her as an adult.

Recalling being warned as a child to never wear nail polish as “God could see the filth under my nails”, McGowan mentioned being raised by her parents in Italy, who were members of a polygamous cult, Children of God. Confessing her parents’ involvement in the strange polygamous group, the actress stated that their passion for Jesus and his preachings is what trapped them.

Rose McGowan Fled From A Polygamous Cult

Discussing her harrowing childhood days, the Hollywood actress Rose McGowan opened up about her parents’ polygamous group. Born outside Florence, McGowan recalled living on a duke’s property along with 50 to 60 hippies, where the children were kept very separate from the parents. The actress further claimed how the group encouraged the members to have a lot of kids and abstain from wealthy existence.

Feeling overwhelmed with her parents’ involvement in the cult group, Rose McGowan mentioned, “I did believe in God, but I didn’t believe in their god. I was pissed off. I lit a wall of Bibles on fire-took a candle to it.” Recalling the living standards, the actress mentioned being disgusted by her parents’ choice of existence. She further mentioned how the women in the cult group were treated which eventually led her father to realize the issue.

I remember watching how the [cult’s] men were with the women, and at a very early age, I decided I did not want to be like those women. They were basically there to serve the men s*xually-you were allowed to have more than one wife.” Rose McGowan stated.

Soon McGowan’s father realized the atrocities that took place against the children and women in the cult group and thus he decided to leave it all behind. “My dad, Nat, Daisy, and I escaped with my dad’s other wife in the middle of the night. I remember running through a cornfield in thunder and lightning, holding my dad’s hand and running as fast as I could” the actress mentioned.

Escaping the polygamous group at the age of 9 with her father, changed McGowan’s life forever. The actress mentioned that her disturbing childhood is what shaped her as an adult.
