Naruto has some very iconic characters, and fans love them. One of them is Sasuke Uchiha, who is the deuteragonist of the series. He is also a born prodigy and the rival of Naruto Uzumaki. In an interview in 2014 with Weekly Shonen Jump #108, Masashi Kishimoto revealed that fans have a different interpretation of Sasuke, which is not accurate.

Masashi Kishimoto expands on Sasuke’s character

Whenever an author creates a character, he has a vision in his mind; however, it is not mandatory that the viewers will be able to understand the same. This is the case with Uchiha Sasuke, the deuteragonist of the series.

Sasuke is a very beloved character who plays a prominent role throughout the storyline. Still, a considerable chunk of the audience loves him due to his desire for revenge and the villainous aura he emits, making him a good villain from the viewers’ viewpoint.

However, according to Masashi Kishimoto, Sasuke is not evil but someone pure. In an interview with Shonen Jump, which is translated by a fan, he said:

“Sasuke is basically a very pure person who doesn’t think about whether what he does is good or bad. He just does what he wants to do, which causes trouble for others. He’s very self-centered, only concerned with himself. Some people might think that what he’s doing is good, like avenging his parents or trying to realize his brother’s ideals. But he is troubling others in his pursuits, so that aspect is bad. So it’s hard to say with clarity [whether Sasuke is a good or bad person] but it’s all about whether it’s right or wrong to be self-centered with your goals. I’d say he’s not good or bad, he’s just pure.”

However, Sasuke has become an entirely different version of himself; he has a family and a daughter who wishes to become a Hokage one day.

Sasuke’s growth throughout the story is admirable

Sasuke’s journey as a character is nothing short of a masterpiece, and it’s one of the best in anime. He is filled with desires to avenge his family as a teenager and to become someone who protects Konoha from the shadows.

It is good to remember that once Sasuke wanted to obliterate Konoha due to how they treated his brother. A character who only knew hatred now has everything he needs and wishes for as a kid.

He continues to be the shadow Hokage, saving the village from various threats single-handedly. Currently, he also serves as the mentor of Uzumaki Boruto.
