Before Ezra Miller played The Flash in the DCEU, fans were already accustomed to Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen in The CW series, The Flash. James Gunn’s reshuffle of DC still hasn’t revealed a verdict on Miller’s fate, but many believe the actor is out of the role after the disastrous standalone film last year. However, a call between Gunn and Gustin, as revealed by the Glee star, makes fans hopeful about the actor’s return to the big screen as The Flash in James Gunn’s DCU.
The CW series had an impressive nine-season run that came to an end in May 2023. Unlike its film counterpart, the series garnered positive feedback from the viewers. Gustin and his entire Team Flash received critical acclaim for their performances.
Grant Gustin Opened Up About James Gunn’s Private Texts To Him
The Flash contributed to an incredible amount of work pressure for Grant Gustin as he revealed in his recent interview with Men’s Health. He was working nearly 16 hours on The CW series and was relieved at some level that the show was finally over after almost a decade. However, Gustin is still interested in returning to the role, provided James Gunn wants him for it.
In February 2024, he shared that he would return to the role if The Suicide Squad director called him since he trusted him (via @DCFilmNews). Gustin admitted to having DM’ed the DC CEO during an interview with The Wrap. In his most recent interview, he further expands on his conversation with Gunn and what it meant for his DC future. Gustin shared that he still had open doors at DC and anything could happen with his future at the studio. He shared with Men’s Health:
“Look, there are no doors right now that are slammed shut for me in any capacity. And that’s why I said what I said about James Gunn.”
However, he clarified that it didn’t necessarily mean that all the rumors about his return as Barry Allen were true. He shared that it was he who texted the Guardians of the Galaxy director and said to him that he was excited to see what Gunn had planned for DCU. In his return texts, Gunn appreciated the actor’s talent and shared that he’d love to work with him someday. Gustin shared:
“I love the Guardians movies, I love what he’s done, but the soundbite that’s getting picked up everywhere… I don’t know if he was already following me or not, but I just DMed him and said, ‘I can’t wait to see what you do with that.’ So he just hit me back up and then, yeah, he said he thought I was talented and said that he’d love to work with me someday, which is a very general nice thing to say.”
Grant Gustin’s interest in the role and the private DMs are good news for fans of the show, who could hopefully see Gustin’s stint on the big screen. However, Gunn only has a few of his trusted actors returning to their roles in the new DCU, like Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller and John Cena‘s Peacemaker.
James Gunn Also Shared That He Would Love To Work With Grant Gustin
Fans may possibly see Grant Gustin in a DCU role, be it The Flash or not. When a fan asked James Gunn why the studio was wasting a talent like Gustin, Gunn replied that the actor’s talent was surely not going to be wasted. Gunn was aware of Gustin’s Broadway stint recently and shared that he was an “incredibly talented guy”. Gunn shared that he would love to work with him at some point. The Superman director shared on Threads:
“Grant is an incredibly talented guy, performing now on Broadway, I believe, and is absolutely not going to waste just because he’s not currently in a DC project. But, of course, I’d love to work with him at some point.”
As for Ezra Miller, Gunn had a rather blunt answer about their return to the DCU at the time of The Flash‘s release. Gunn shared, “We’re just going to have to wait and see” (via AP News). In October 2023, Variety reported that Miller along with other DCEU actors were possibly out of Gunn’s new universe.
Gustin’s The Flash is now available for streaming on Netflix.
