James Gunn and Peter Safran have been pretty busy bringing a new era of DCU to live action. And their first-ever film will be Superman, releasing next year. Starring David Corenswet as the titular superhero, fans are needless to say excited and eagerly awaiting.
Gunn, who is usually sharing updates of the film on his social media, recently tweeted a picture of Corenswet in the iconic red and blue suit. While he looked as good as ever, one fan in particular went on to edit it a bit, and the fan edit looks infinitely better and more in line with Gunn’s vision for the character.
Superman Fan Edit Captures The Real Tone of The Character
During the Zack Snyder era of DCU, Superman was dark and grittier, more so than he had ever been before. While he still stood for truth, hope, and justice, the character was nonchalantly dark and prone to violence. While many loved his version, others were not so fond of it.
Hence, when James Gunn took over the comic book verse, he was adamant about making significant tonal changes to the character. To be inspired by All-Star Superman comics (see X), the movie isn’t an origin story but more of Kal-El’s journey. The official synopsis of the movie reads,
“[Superman] tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.”
While further details of the movie have been kept under wraps, Gunn recently shared a photo of David Corenswet in the suit, sitting with his back to a huge window wearing his boots, one can clearly see the city is under attack.
Fans loved the photo and went on to state how good the actor looked. However, one fan went on to create an incredible fan edit that looks more in line with Gunn’s happy and beacon of hope Superman vision.
Fans Love Superman Fan Edit More Than The Actual Picture
He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned… reads the synopsis of Superman. Yet, the official picture of David Corenswet in the blue and red suit looks more tonally dark and similar to Henry Cavill‘s gritty Superman.
However, the fan edit completely erases the threatening backdrop and replaces it with a wonderful, clear view of the metropolis, where everything looks peaceful and serene. As the fan edit went viral, DC fans expressed how the fan edit looks better and similar to Gunn’s vision for the movie.
This is what the image should’ve been tbh

Now this should’ve been the tone. Bright and colorful.

Suit looks even better without the battle damage 🤯🔥

Wanting to make Superman more sincere and traditional (see The Hollywood Reporter) the actual image instead repeats the same mistake as Snyder did, while the fan edit captures the very essence of the traditional notion of the character. Hence, it is no wonder that fans love the fan edit more, and Gunn should take notes before it is too late.
Superman will be in theatres on July 11, 2025.
