The Helldivers 2 controversy led to much turbulence between the players and Arrowhead’s team. In a nutshell, it was about Sony forcing players on PC to create PSN accounts and link them with their Steam profiles.

After a lot of chaos, it ended when Sony announced that linking one’s PSN accounts to Steam would no longer be a mandatory requirement. An announcement from the game’s discord has surfaced which will take the Divers by Surprise.

Not long ago, the Helldivers 2 Discord was a battlefield with much tension between players who played on PC and those who played on PlayStation 5. It also saw players leaving inflammatory messages for the team and developers.

After Sony caved in and officially rolled back the requirement, a shocking announcement was made on the Helldivers 2‘s Discord channel. This is what the game’s 2 Community Manager said:

The second paragraph of the message is what would most likely come as a surprise to players who were rejoicing not long ago after Sony’s announcement:

We don’t have any updated information about the acount linking yet, particularly of anything related to players outside PSN regions.

To clarify… the mandatory account linking will not be going forward. There are still ongoing discusssions between parties about the details…

Now, while the announcement doesn’t invalidate the one made by Sony but adds to it, it now begs another question: if the players are outside PSN regions and linking isn’t mandatory, why are discussions being held? And for what?

Sony Might Come Up with an Alternative to Account Linking in Helldivers 2

Sony might be upto something else now.
Sony might be upto something else now.

Now that the burning question has been put forth, it makes sense to ask if discussions over a requirement that has since been scrapped are necessary. If yes, it might mean the story isn’t and might go deeper.

Sony might have an ulterior motive behind all of this. It could be inflating the number of PSN Signups due to account linking or something similar to please shareholders. Players think it might once again be trying to come clean and paint the Helldivers 2 developer as the scapegoat. It is certainly less than ideal that the discussions haven’t stopped as they should have, ideally.

While it is doubtful that Sony will reinforce the account linking procedure after formally scrapping it, the hassles for Divers on PC, especially those outside PSN regions might not be over yet.
