When a game like Helldivers 2 hits the market, the demand for a PvP mode is inevitable. After all, it has a lot of guns, already features squad-based gameplay, and requires an active internet connection (even for solo play sessions).

Since you are already playing with people all over the world, why not add the option to play against them as well, right? Well, it seems the developers are strongly against this decision. So much so, that we will never be getting a PvP mode to the game unless someone can create some sort of mod for the PC version.

The Devs of Helldivers 2 Are Against PvP Modes Due to Toxicity

Confirmation for there never being a PvP mode for Helldivers 2 came directly from the top boss at Arrowhead Games, Johan Pilestedt. He shared this decision during a conversation on X. Pilestedt was affirming they have plans to build Helldivers 2 into a long-lasting title when another user chimed in to say an inclusion of PvP would draw players away from Call of Duty and keep the hardcore gamers engaged. In response to this, Pilestedt confirmed there would never be a PvP mode for Helldivers 2

Another user said it was sad to see “another developer scared to add pvp to their game”, to which Pilestedt responded saying they are “Not scared” and simply want to stay away from the toxicity that is inevitable when it comes to a PvP experience. He also stated Arrowhead Games is focused on making challenging games people can play with their friends in a PvE setting. He even suggested Escape from Tarkov as an alternative for people seeking a fun PvP experience.

Helldivers 2 has been the talk of the town ever since its release on 8 February 2024. The co-op PvE shooter draws inspiration from classic movies such as Starship Troopers in its over-the-top gunplay and explosions. Even the writing is reminiscent of the parody movies of old. With such a strong setting for fun times, introducing a contentious mode such as PvP would definitely work against the vibe Arrowhead is looking to create with this game.

Toxic Culture in PvP Games is By No Way a New Complaint Amongst Gamers

Helldivers 2 players will always be at each others side, aside from when they blow each other up with friendly fire

Even the most mainstream games such as Call of Duty or Medal of Honor have elements of toxicity within their lobbies and matches. Some have blamed the competitiveness of the space while others say it is the anonymity that online gaming provides. It’s easy to dish out insults to someone you have never met, and can’t even see, in a random CoD lobby.

While developers have been taking steps and are much more stringent with their bans and punishments against players who exhibit such toxic behavior, the environment is still pervasive in many titles. But, not all hope is lost.

Helldivers 2 does have friendly fire, so technically, PvP is always on if you wish to engage in some player-on-player violence. But, do you feel the developer is shooting themselves in the foot by swearing off PvP? Let us know in the comments below!
