Helldivers 2 is at the peak of its success right now. This third-person sci-fi co-op shooter had no business being as good as it turned out to be. Its smooth gameplay mechanics, its flawless connectivity. Not to forget, the awesome weapon design and weapon handling of this game, which make shooting every enemy a dream. Everything is just too good in Helldivers 2.

To top it all, its developers, Arrowhead Game Studios, have done a commendable job keeping this game online. They keep updating it, they keep fixing those annoying server issues, and they keep making sure those hackers don’t make people’s lives hell. Yet, after all this, one small thing remains missing from Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 fans are still waiting for the developers to add melee weapons to it

Third-person shooter games are fun; players get a lot of freedom in movement, the character feels nimbler, and the character can actually be seen. This means a character’s customization makes a difference for once.

One more thing this camera angle allows for is for players to see those weapons hanging on the side of the protagonist. Be it a machine gun, a handgun, or a small knife, everything has a place. Sometimes on the back, other times on the character’s waist.

Helldivers 2 has all of those things, but there’s one small thing that this game’s missing: melee weapons. Now this is not a small ask; it’s not a weapon; it’s a whole new category of weapons; developers would have to add a bunch of them.

All of those weapons would have different damage, speed, handling, etc. But it would definitely be worth it if players could see themselves running around with a knife or even a machete in hand. Stabbing enemies with it on their weak points would be glorious.

Helldivers 2 gained a lot from shifting its perspective

Some fans asked Helldivers 2 community manager Twinbeard about these melee weapons. His reply was pretty interesting; he suggested that the developers have been busy for a while. He is pointing at the stuff developers introduced in the updates that came last month.

“It might still happen. As you know, we’ve been fairly busy the past month.”

Fans would be happy enough to know this much, as Helldivers 2 developers are pretty clear about what they do and do not want in their game. The prime example is the time when someone asked the game’s creative director about the addition of DLSS and FRS to the game, and he straightaway suggested they would rather add new content than fancy new tech.

Fans should keep in mind that adding a whole new weapon type to a game like this is not easy. After all, this game is a shooter, and developers would have to add a bunch of new animations and such to it to add melee weapons. This is why, if they are in fact adding them to this game, it would take some time.

All the while, the Xbox port of this game is nowhere to be seen

While PlayStation 5 and PC users are enjoying Helldivers 2 to the fullest, Xbox owners are still waiting for a port. Even after starting a successful petition, no one was there to reply to these requests. The reason is still the same, though: this game is published by Sony.

Hence, the developers cannot do anything about it. The ball is in Sony’s court right now. There are very slim chances of anything happening, though, as Sony is pretty possessive about its first-party games.
