It’s time for the fans of Henry Cavill’s Superman to sit down and grab a handful of tissues – bad news incoming. After Black Adam set the excitement of DCU fans at an all-time high with Henry Cavill’s return, fans were super thrilled to think about future DCU projects with the red-caped superhero. However, amidst the recent rumors of James Gunn rebooting the entire universe, one turned out to be true.

Henry Cavill took to his Instagram today to confirm that his time as the character was over and shared the heartiest goodbye to his fans as well as to Superman. Although, the actor’s exit does not mean that the superhero universe will have no Superman, at all. Apparently, James Gunn has a project in mind, just without Henry Cavill.

After the prayers of Henry Cavill’s fans were answered in Black Adam, the news of him passing on the cape comes as quite the blow. A few months back, an ecstatic Cavill shared a video of him announcing his return as Superman stating, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed.” However, the said dawn of hope did not end up working in his favor, nor in the favor of his fans.

Today, Cavill made another Superman-related post, however this time, it didn’t have a tone as happy as the previous one. He posted a lengthy statement saying that he had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and that he will, in fact, not be returning as the superhero, adding that “This news isn’t the easiest but it is life.” Cavill made sure to maintain his composure as he very professionally wished the studios the happiest of fortunes.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Cavill continued his statement and addressed his fans and the people who have supported him in his journey as Superman. He stated that while they can mourn for a bit, they must realize that Superman is still around, only not with Cavill’s face. However, for most fans, Cavill was the perfect Superman. He added that everything the character stands for still exists, along with examples set by him.

“For those who have been by my side through the years… we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember… Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Although it will be difficult for fans to say goodbye to Cavill’s Superman, especially since they just got him back, there isn’t anything that can be done anymore. The Gunn-Safran duo knows what’s coming for the DCU, and they seem to have a concrete plan.

A Younger Superman for DCU

Now, what does Cavill’s exit mean? Is the DC universe going to continue to expand without their OG superhero? That is certainly not the case. Instead of continuing the story of Superman fighting the bad guys and saving the planet, the DCU will now shed a light on how the crime-fighting, ray of hope superhero became what he is.

Gunn shared a series of tweets on his account about the “slate” they have ready to go. Among the characters that might be on the newly-designed slate, is Superman. Gunn stated that initially, the studios will be focusing on the earlier life of Superman, confirming that the character won’t be played by Cavill. However, he also added that they had a meeting with the Enola Holmes actor where they talked about the possibilities of working together in the future.

Only time will tell what Gunn and Safran have planned for Superman and what projects will have them working with Cavill. But first, fans need to take some time and adjust to the heartbreaking news that was just given to them!
